I honestly think between Clemson, St. John's, and Memphis, St. John's is #3 in the order of most toughest remaining OOC opponents....

I actually find it unfortunate that they are 3 of our last 4 OOC games. I'd hate to be struggling going into SEC play. Especially since the first game is on the road.

Glad to see we're still putting up some points today though.

Well, if they are amongst the toughest of our OOC opponents, I'd certainly rather they were 3 of our last 4 before the SEC slate, than be 3 of the FIRST 4 we play.

We'll have had the time to learn some roles on the team, learn how to play together (which Dozier who looked pretty scared/nervous at first is now playing like he's had a season under his belt, and Silva is also starting to settle in) in addition to the younger players learning the pace of the college game. IMO the way the schedule is ordered couldn't be better. Now I was hoping that we'd have had 1 or 2 tougher opponents on it, but what can we do?

At one point we were slated to participate in the SEC-Big12 Challenge this year but was dropped due to our game being on the road again for the 2-3rd straight time, which was unfair to us. But still I'm OK with the order of OOC games - the SEC schedule will be a decisive step up in physicality so the tougher OOC ones can help prep the team for tight scenarios...

Team looks great. It's awesome to see the team performing so well on offense.

Silva is an absolute monster. Glad that scary looking knee injury wasn't anything serious

I'm still sort of holding my breath a bit....still lots of season left to play. Last season we started 9-3 including a 7-game winning streak that culminated with the win over a ranked Iowa State team. We got votes (!!!) in both polls, just outside of the top 25.

Then we start the SEC schedule and lose the first 2 SEC games that were both very winnable, and that was all she wrote. So I like how the team is playing in terms of discipline: we've played more like the 7-0 run last season and less like the losses to Charlotte and Akron when we looked like we wanted to be anywhere else but on the floor for those games. Still the big question is, can we keep up the consistency and not fall into another mid-season slump...

We have more offensive depth BY FAR than what we had last season, and while we still don't have a sure go-to player, we now have several who are developing confidence in being able to hit shots in critical times. The pressure and physical play will ramp up once the SEC schedule begins, but if we can continue this level of play and team-wide effort into the latter portion of the schedule I am excited to see what we can accomplish...

Great seasons thus far by both teams now at 7-0 each. The women need to improve greatly, in turnovers, making the point-blank layups, and just overall discipline and effort defensively. I'm hoping the near 2 weeks on the west coast wore everyone out and they were just ready to get back home, and now the week off at home practicing for Duke this Sunday will help get their heads back on straight.

I am happy to see Bianca start to settle in and find a comfort spot in games: she averaged 17 ppg shooting around 60% in the 3 games in Hawaii. I also like Colley's contributions thus far: Cuevas is shooting and want's to shoot and score like the other top scorers on the team, and Colley is quickly catching up to Sessions in the # of shot attempts despite playing only half as many minutes. USC needs players that want to shoot and provide offense, and not just stand out on the courts for 25 minutes per gm and take 1-2 shots a gm and score 3-4 ppg. Cuevas and Colley want to contribute.

As for the men's team: before the season started, I thought about who would be the team's offensive leaders for the season. I hoped Thornwell would heal up from his tendinitis and score around 15 ppg or so that I expected for his soph. season, and that Notice would also score around 10-15 ppg. I also hoped that Dozier would find a role and score around 10 ppg.

Those were the 3 I figured would average around dbl digits for USC. I also hoped Chat, Carrera, and Kacinas would average somewhere around 7-8-9 ppg each to round out the scoring, and that as the season progressed Silva may average around that as well.

I certainly didn't expect both Chat and Kacinas to step up like they have offensively and lead the team in scoring, and yet still Thornwell, Notice, and even Carerra are averaging in dbl-digits as well. Dozier has shown great flashes of his talent, and once he cuts down on the turnovers and fouls, he'll stay on the floor longer and become even more of a contributor. I really like the potential of Dozier, Silva, and Cobb thus far: they are showing that they are legitimate true freshmen, but also have shown they are ready to contribute to the team NOW. Silva is a basketball atom bomb of energy and effort ready to EXPLODE: he may have a bigger impact this season that what Dozier does.

The men's team has also suffered from some tropical paradise-itis that the women's team dealt with, and need to tighten up on defense. The coaching staff has until Saturday to coach the team up for South Florida, then has another 10 days to prepare for woeful Drexel on the 15th. Hopefully they improve from it and keep on rolling....

Silva reminds me so much of Balkman. He provides a quality bench replacement when Carrera has foul trouble or needs a break. Last year, the team would be counting down the minutes until Carrera could come back in. Silva really helps temper that.

Dozier looks good. You can tell he's raw, but he's already playing a little better since the beginning of the season.

Frank may have something this year, boys (and girl).

So, I don't want to be too critical. We're 7-0 and Chat is playing great. But can explain to me why the dude seems to get blocked so much? Usually by smaller guys.

IMO Chat has always been a 5-10 guard in a 6-11 man's body. He has always shied away from physical contact, and always acted like when a loose ball is in the paint and available to be rebounded, others are supposed to go up after it, and he's supposed to be this little guard that stands out of the way.

He hardly ever bangs back against the other bigs that bang against him, although he has made more attempts at it this season thus far than at any other time during his career. He is all finesse unless he's all alone at the rim, then he'll make a show of it by slamming the ball down or slamming down a hard rebound. But if he has to physically hold his position or bang against anyone else prior to doing that, he typically backs down.

Chat will bring the ball down often, and again when he's trying to score will not do it from a position of strength where he physically held his position against other bigs, so that's how the others are able to get the blocks. If Chat physically kept his body between them and the ball, they'd have a much harder time blocking the shot without fouling Chat. It's also why he's missed tons and tons of easy layups over his career too: he just doesn't play from a position of strength, and lets himself get banged around in the post....

Best start since 03-04.

Played terrible in the second half though, guess that happens when you're up 31 at half & check out.

Yeah, it was frustratingly sloppy, but you know Martin will get on them for it. They were so damn strong in the first half it can be difficult to want to play as hard later in the game.

Yep it's obvious that this team is still learning how to be a winning team for 40 minutes a game. Still very impressed with how they played at both ends of the floor in the 1st half, and hopefully it was something to learn from and gain some confidence in.

We play again in 10 days against what should be a substantially over-matched Drexel team, who as of last check is 1-6 after beating La Salle 66-53 today to record their first win of the season. The Dragons have struggled mightily on defense this season thus far....
