Might as well get it started now, for offseason news & notes:

First off is the women's team:

USC women to play at Duke

Some women’s basketball news in the middle of SEC Media Days …

Duke released a statement on Tuesday afternoon confirming that South Carolina will play in Durham this year. The Gamecocks and Blue Devils will play at 1 p.m. on Dec. 7 on ESPN2, the day after the USC men host Oklahoma State (and the Gamecocks’ football team may be playing in the SEC Championship Game).

Duke will return the game in Columbia in 2015-16.

The Gamecocks’ schedule isn’t out yet, but it should be coming soon. There will definitely be games against Duke, Clemson, San Diego State, Southern Cal and Connecticut. Dawn Staley has had a hard time getting games (the annual game with North Carolina is a casualty this year) but has managed to schedule road games at two of the sport’s biggest powers.

USC won’t travel to UConn until February, during the SEC season, but the Duke game will most likely be the biggest game of the early season. The Blue Devils went 28-7 last year but were beaten on their home court in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

LINK

Adding some quality opponents to the schedule: other teams have already posted their full schedules for next season, but USC continues to hold off as they are still in discussions with 2 or 3 other programs to finalize their OOC slate. I'm not so sure why it's been as hard for the staff to schedule games - I haven't seen other top program struggle like this. Mostly programs want to schedule the better teams to get a good gauge on where their own programs are. But the Duke addition is a big one, even if we have to start out at their place first...

I don't understand. It's like we're really good so teams don't want the loss, but we don't have the name recognition as a UConn or a Duke so if teams are going to lose they want it to be "worth it" or something?

It has always felt like an SEC vs ESPN thing. ESPN wants to promote the ACC and Uconn when they should promote a broader base - say 20 to 30 teams - to build the overall viewing numbers. With SEC TV it means giving up national feed for a footprint feed which seems bad as it will kill national exposure. However, if the SEC were smart they would use it to get better games scheduled and then force the issue.

Seems like Stanford vs Cocks and Duke vs Cats did not get national love on ESPN but with SEC TV these type games should at least make it to the SEC TV broadcasts. The other solution is for a school not to be named Tennessee win the NCAA from the SEC and the league needs to get at least 1 school outside of the Lady Vols in the Final Four EACH and EVERY season. Doing so would make it hard for ESPN not to give the women more airtime. If you can get the airtime, other schools form other conferences will schedule for the exposure.

SEC by Final Fours with last year in Final Four in BOLD :

18 Tennessee, 2008 = 7 seasons ago
05 LSU, 2008 = 7 seasons ago

05 Georgia, 1999 = 16 seasons ago
01 Arkansas, 1998 = 17 seasons ago
01 Alabama, 1994 = 21 seasons ago
01 Vanderbilt, 1993 = 22 seasons ago
03 Auburn, 1990 = 25 seasons ago

01 Texas A&M, 2011 = 4 seasons ago but they were in the B12 at the time.

Viewed another way some schools have been getting to the Elite Eight but no further as of late.

Did I read that right? 3 Big12 teams? Baylor, Okie State and Iowa State? Add Clemson and your tourney and that's a pretty good line up. Pulling some wins against Big12 teams is never a bad thing.

Hope we can have a schedule like this when we're more competitive.

With that said

Isn't this like the 6th time we're playing them in about 10 years or so?

quote:

Nov. 20-23 - Charleston Classic (Charleston, S.C.)

That's cool. Went down to it last time we were there in Horn's 2nd year (I think it was) Saw us beat USF. Our best all around player got hurt for the year in that tournament.. we finished 2nd to Miami and our season just wasn't the same without him.

Jan. 3 - Iowa State (Brooklyn, N.Y.)

Is this a part of some tournament? Is Martin taking a page out of McGuire's book and trying to get exposure in NYC for recruiting purposes?

Not saying y'all will win the SEC this year, but I do think this is the year you'll see SC making their presence known in the SEC. Thornwell is the real deal. "Martin's" players now have a bit of experience. Looked at your schedule last year and it really sucked. Nearly all your high profile games were on the road. Just the opposite this year, including Clemson at home along with Baylor and Okie State. Y'all finished the year strong, which is what you like to see with a young team. Just hope the fan base is still behind Martin. He will get it done there.

Thanks for the input, much appreciated.

Yeah, we're looking forward to the home schedule this year. In retrospect it was rather astute of Martin to schedule last year the way he did knowing he was still in his honeymoon and might reap the benefits of the return games this season ... hopefully.

We're definitely still behind Martin. He's sold all-in to our program and fans and has a lot of good things going-on around here. He doesn't want to be the weak link in the big-four coaching chain of Spurrier-Staley-Holbrook ... Martin.

Martin is going to get'er done here. He's on a mission and I think we all pretty-much agree that he is dedicated. The whole thing that went down with his suspension last year for being a dick ... it was good for everyone involved. It brought everyone closer together.

That's part of what makes him good. He isn't going to tolerate less than full effort. He will get the most out of his players.

ETA - Left off the n't. He isn't going to tolerate. My bad.

He goes overboard sometimes .... those guys were giving it everything they had. Sometimes he does too much yelling and not enough coaching IMHO, but I think the suspension slapped him back to earth and woke-him-up about coaching the kids and not necessarily berating them in public.

The good thing that came out of it was the players rallying around him during the suspension and then the resulting play afterwards ... we upset a couple of teams and made a run to end the year.

If it carries-over to this year we have a chance to improve greatly.

Martin is doing a great job of endearing himself to the community. That's going to pay huge dividends to both him and us (fans) in the long run. I've spoken with him personally, we sat beside one another at the Regionals (baseball) two seasons ago and he loves it here - feels like this is his home, the perfect situation in the perfect division of the perfect conference for what he want's to do as a coach. Now, that's changed some with the new alignment but we'll probably still have Florida and Kentucky as permanent two-game opponents so he'll be happy and we'll use it to our advantage hopefully.

Not many fans outside of our fanbase know about our basketball history. It's something that can be built upon and there is plenty of talent in SC, if we can keep them home, to use as a foundation for success.

What I like most about Martin, so far at least, is that he seems to recruit well, he has a good eye, for talent that fits his system very well ... which is scrappy and methodical.

Martin might have needed a reminder, but you don't want to rein him in too much. It's his intensity that he brings that also brings out the most in others. I absolutely agree that he can recruit, especially players that fit his system. Honestly, don't know much about the team's history at SC, but what I do know is that the fan base has always supported it STRONGLY, win or lose.

Really can't wait to see what the Thornwell kid does this year. Averaging double figures as a true freshman is impressive.

I know this puts us at a high sticky level but with the season coming up and the first reports coming out I figured I'd go ahead and keep it where it's more accessible.

I'm not sure why some posters complain about too many stickies. Its not like this board gets enough traffic/posts for them to actually affect recent posts from falling off the first page.

I'm still bummed the youtube sticky went away
