So I've decided I want to start trying different types of wine(s).

What should I get started with? Friend gave me a bottle of pinto noir and it's pretty good.

Are there wines that carry stigma's like mostly females drink them? Men?

Are you that insecure? Drink whatever you think tastes good. If it's pink than I'll reserve the right to make fun of your girlie drink.

Try everything and drink what you like. I'm a fan of Cabs and Rieslings which are at very different ends of the spectrum.

A friend of mine claimed she didn't like red wine. I turned her on to La Crema pinot noir and she was hooked.

Drink the red ones room temp and drink the white ones chilled. Don't drink the pink ones and stay away from wine in a box.

Those are the basic rules. After those, just go to Albertsons and buy a few bottles that cost between 7-15 bucks each. Some will suck. Some you will really enjoy. I keep a list of the ones that I really like and really dislike so that I can repeat or avoid purchasing them again.

Also, no need to spend big bucks at first. Later when you figure out what you enjoy you can spend a little extra on that kind to get something top shelf. Until then, there are plenty of great wines for respectable prices.

And they're generally wrong.

Just drink what you like. All wine goes with all food.

Yeah, most people drink their red wine too warm and their white wine too cold. Both should be slightly chilled.

I drink pink wine all the time. It's hard to beat a good, dry rose.

Pop those bottles early and let those suckers breathe for a little while, or buy an aerator. Makes a big difference IMO.

Ask around for a good bottle shop in your area. A good wine guy should be able to listen to your desired price point and what you like/dislike flavor wise and pick out a good bottle for you....go from there.

1. Quit being insecure about it. You like a full-bodied Cab? Enjoy. Like to drink rose on a hot summer evening? Go nuts.

2. Find a wine store in your area where the staff is knowledgeable. I have a place in my neighborhood that I love, because I can go in and say "I'm cooking 'x' tonight and would love a bottle in the $15-$20 range to pair with it." They immediately can recommend at least a couple options. They also sell tons of wine in the $11-$13 range that are really good, but because they aren't well known are still cheaper in price.

Also, see if that store does a "Wine of the Month" type club. We used to do that at our store. Basically, we paid $75/mo, and every month we'd receive six bottles (a mix of reds/whites), almost all of which we'd never had or heard of. If you do the math, you're only paying $12.50 a bottle, and it's a great way to expose yourself to a variety of wines you otherwise likely wouldn't have picked out yourself.

Yes, get to know someone at a wine store.
And go to tastings, especially the free ones.
I took a five week beginners wine class at Martin Wine Cellar several years ago and it was a great experience and way to learn

Correct. But not ice cold, which is a common mistake. Just chilled.

Typically correct, although maybe a little less so than in the past. I think putting decent(ish) wine in a box or even a can nowadays is becoming "trendy."
