Repeal to override multiyear scholarship rule fails

http://www.wareagleextra.com/2012/02/17/repeal-to-override-multiyear-scholarship-rule-fails/

quote:

A repeal effort to overturn multiyear scholarships like the ones Auburn offered the 2012 recruiting class failed by a mere two votes in the NCAA vote Friday.

Opponents of the rule — Auburn and Florida are the only two SEC schools to offer multiyear deals — needed to get 207 of 330 votes, or 62.5 percent, to overturn the rule and force schools to go back to offering one-year renewable scholarships for the next cycle.

“I am pleased that student-athletes will continue to benefit from the ability of institutions to offer athletics aid for more than one year,” NCAA President Mark Emmert said, “but it’s clear that there are significant portions of the membership with legitimate concerns. As we continue to examine implementation of the rule, we want to work with the membership to address those concerns.”

The rule was passed in the fall, but enough schools raised formal objections that a possible repeal vote was needed. Objecting schools had argued that the tool could be a recruiting advantage for schools prepared to offer the security of a multiyear scholarship. In addition to Auburn and Florida, most of the schools in the Big Ten — including Wisconsin, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Nebraska and several others — began offering multiyear scholarships this season.

Then offer your OWN multi-year scholarships, you whiny bitches.

Seriously? You know that an athletic scholly has all the conditions of an academic scholly right?

I think that's the point. There are no academic scholarship, at least I'm aware of, that set for four years.

re: Repeal to override multiyear scholarship rule fails
Why would the NCAA want to mandate an extra benefit to student athletes that is not there for the student body at large? If they make football schollies for 4 years then they should be required to make all of the other sports and academic schollies 4 years as well.

It would be ripping the title 9 pandora box open again.

There are academic scholarships which are for four years. There is one stipulation-the student has to maintain a specific GPA. I don't know the exact language, but there are also some requirements of athletes to maintain their scholarships. They can't skip practices and workouts and still get the free ride.
To me the four year academic and athletic scholarships are the same. If you work hard and do what's expected, you will have earned a four year scholly.

The less desirable programs have to sweeten the pot to get recruits.Even then the results were not very impressive. It will end up biting you boogs in the arse when your 4 year schollys cop an attitude and refuse to go all out in the weight room or on the field and you can't do a damn thing about it without fear of a law suit. This move will guarantee your mediocrity for years to come.

UGA will start offering them officially in time for BBall signing period, although this policy has been in place unofficially for years.

Nothing but a recruiting ploy by AU. But it won't work.

The shitty players will just be benched and will transfer anyway. The only ones that will stay are the ones that don't care if they play or not.

Saban is smart enough to point out to recruits that at AU, your teammates may be slackers. And that all you have to do at Bama is put in the effort and you're not going anywhere.

I am glad my school gave out the 4 year scholarship. Bama fans are in favor of year to year.

I don't think it will impact recruiting because a 17-18 yr old kid will think that they will not get their scholarship renewed.

BTW- UF had plenty of slackers on one year scholarships that would get renewed.

I like the four year plan myself, but it's not a big deal to me.

Which is my point. If you meet the requirements, whether it "four year" or "year-to-year", you'll remain. I don't see what all the fuss is about. I was on an academic scholarship at Alabama. I lost it after my first year. Luckily I improved enough to regain it.

I know it's hard for you to look beyond AU when it comes to this kind of thing, but over 70% of the SEC voted in favor of this as well.

Gives smaller schools a pitch.
