ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Auburn's Gus Malzahn has been named Home Depot Coach of the Year, and Washington's Austin Seferian-Jenkins was selected the John Mackey Award winner for the nation's outstanding tight end.
The announcements were made Wednesday. Both awards will be presented Thursday as part of the College Football Awards Show at Disney's Boardwalk.
In his first season as Auburn coach, Malzahn led the Tigers to a 12-1 record and berth in the BCS national championship game against Florida State on Jan. 6. A win in the title game would make Auburn's improvement from 3-9 in 2012 the best in FBS history.
Malzahn is only the second first-year coach to lead his team to the national championship game.

Unrelated note, I hate sponsorships.

It's really not even close. Who else did what Gus did in his first year? He took a terrible AU team from last year and got them into the BCSNC game. Has ANYBODY ELSE EVER done that? Seriously?

For what? They just won a natty 3 years ago. It's not like he has done something unprecedented.

They're probably just realizing that they gave it to the wrong guy in 2010 and this is an effort to fix that mistake

No brainer. He engineered a fantastic comeback, this season.

While he is deserving, it should have been Cutcliffe's.
What he did at Duke is more impressive if only because he did it at Duke. What Gus did is impressive, but does more to highlight just how bad Chizik really was, IMO.

Wonder what happens if I search for "malzahn" at homedepot.com?
ETA:
Interestingly enough, no results when searching for "gus malzahn" at homedepot.com
But search for "nick saban" or "les miles" will get you Bama or LSU gear, respectively. I miss the "les miles" lawn care search results.
