Generals and career minded officers and diplomats lied about progress last decade.
Nobody wanted to be one to end it since this was predictable, we finally did end it and Taliban took over in a week instead of the anticipated 2- 3 months.

Thankfully the current administration had the foresight to evacuate the military presence under the cover of darkness, not telling their allies, instead of ensuring the safety of the civilians first.

That is absolutely true. The Washington Post published the Afghanistan Papers in 2019, which made it apparent that the situation on the ground wasn't always conveyed to the public honestly.
That set of documents and the Rumsfeld cables are some documents more people need to read, because it becomes clear that Rumsfeld didn't understand what was going on, and that very few media outlets were honest about the war.
