Here are statistic you should know
FBI Sources Table 43: Break down of arrest by race
Note that race categories are {white, black, Asian, Native American, Hawaiian}. Hispanic is included in white. Note that per census data ~ 60% vs 75% population being White not Hispanics vs White. Ie this would suggest white not Hispanic is 80% of the White census records.

Note similar breakdown for 2010 -2018 data

Break down of arrest using the split of white to white not Hispanics and Hispanic from census would suggest:

White not Hispanic: 69% * 80% = 55.2%
Hispanic: 69% * 20% = 13.8%
Blacks: 27%

Ratios relative to White not Hispanic.

White not Hispanic: 1:1
Hispanic: 1:0.25
Blacks: 1:0.5

Data on police fatalities since 2015:

People shot by police per data break down. Data is available for download from the site.

White: 50%
Hispanic : 19%
Black: 26%

This is corroborated with other sites providing this information like statistica

When you break this down to rate of fatal shooting per arrest: % Shoot / Ratio

White: 50% / 1 = 0.50
Hispanic: 19% / 0.25 = 0.76
Black: 26% / 0.50 = 0.52

Note that this includes both suspects that are armed and not armed. If you stop here with you analysis, you would say there is no disparity Whites and Blacks except for Hispanics by + 0.2. But this is not what the protest is about. Let’s continue digging.

Now focus on those fatal shootings of unarmed people:

White: 42%
Hispanic: 18%
Black: 36%

Now break down to rate of unarmed fatal shooting per arrest: % Shoot Unarmed / Ratio

White: 42% / 1 = 0.42
Hispanic: 18% / 0.25 = 0.72
Black: 36% / 0.50 = 0.72

The bottom set of statistics is what the uproar is about. Both Blacks and Hispanics are at around the same rate, +0.32 or around 75% more than the rate for whites. This is the stat that has blacks and even Hispanics uneasy with police interaction.

Note that this is all normalized to arrest and therefore has nothing to do with population breakdown etc. Its all relative to the encounters with police to remove biases

You can download the data and do your own analysis. I will point out that in any case, those that are the majority will always have the most numbers. When comparing categories you must compare either based on rate or % of the affect to gain clarity and normalize to remove biases. Just be aware of such. In addition I learned that there is a lot of lumping which can be very misleading. Case in point the lumping of Hispanics with Whites for certain things but breaking out for others. If you went White to White without looking at the data and how it is structured then it can be very misleading.

Thanks for the info. But you didn’t really answer my question and if you don’t know it off the top of your head that’s fine. Was asking for actual numbers not %’s to determine magnitude of the problem.

Regardless this is a discussion for the poli board and it’s noon on Saturday so I’d rather maintain my sanity. Enjoy your weekend.
