good boots, hat, gloves are a must. I live in a very rural, very cold place so I keep what i call my "winter survival bag" in my vehicle for about 6 months out of the year. I keep in it, a -20 degree sleeping bag, candles, waterproof matches, leatherman, shovel, sternos, first aid kit, little folding sterno stove thing (so i can melt snow), pot, canned soups, granola bars, emergency blankets, rope and a few things im forgetting at the moment.

This might be overkill as I dont know how rural you will be. ANother good idea is kitty litter. you can sometimes pour it under a spinning tire and it will give you enough traction to get unstuck.
