He suffers from self-loathing.

It is too much for him to face his own self-hate, so he tends to project his own issues onto others. It is not that his put-downs always reflect what he doesn’t like about himself; it is that his put-downs allow him to keep his own toxic shame at bay.

No matter how many people he puts-down, it won’t change how he feels on the inside. If he wants to change his behavior, he will need to face what he has been avoiding.
