I tore my labrum 6 years ago and my shoulder was never the same even after surgery. I've had numerous MRIs on both shoulders since then but I've always continued to lift heavy with proper form. Proper form is the key and I still tend to avoid overhead presses altogether.
The girl I was seeing at the time had a dad who was a PA at the local orthopaedic center. He told me that unless you're an athlete competitively playing a sport then there's really no need to get surgery. Supposedly it's not common to get surgery in other countries for a torn Labrum.
It hurts like a bitch and rehab is a bitch but just manage your workout appropriately and you should be fine.

When I tore my right one it was a bad one. Dislocated completely. Somewhat healed but shoulder was never stable. Waited 2 years till I couldn't sleep. Because entire arm would go numb. I. Could lift heavy but couldn't do many reps before dead arm would set in. Finally had surgery in 04 and shoulder has been good as new since then. The rehab after 4 weeks of immobilization is horrible.
