Deadline acquisitions don't change the WS projections much. Especially for a team that has nearly locked up a division. If you're the type of person who doesn't buy into projection systems then this is probably meaningless to you. But the Astros FO certainly has their own internal projection systems that they look at for all manners of things.

Projections very from site to site, but they all seem to have the Dodgers making the greatest improvement. Going from something like 24% to 26%. Not insignificant, but not the colossal change many view it as. I'm disappointed no larger additions were made, but I think the doom and gloom routine is overblown.

This is a perfect description of how I feel about it.

A barometer I like to use in predicting playoff outcomes is how many consecutive losses does a team endure during the season.

So far this season, the Astros have lost 3 games in a row 3 times and lost 2 games in a row 3 times. The point is, this team does not get dominated very often. The only sweep has been from CLE. The only teams to beat the Astros 2 games in a row: CLE, KC, TEX and DET. KC and CLE have both done it twice.

Considering how non-threatening the SP and RP has been for the past 2 months, they have managed to remain a dominant team.

All that said, CLE, KC, and NYY all worry me in the playoffs. The BoSox don't worry me too much -- I think the Astros team is better suited for Fenway than the Red Sox.

Imo they can completely change a team it's just difficult to tell at the outset which one will.

It was a pretty widely held consensus that the Rangers won the deadline in the AL last year. One year later they let Beltran walk and traded away both lucroy and jeffress.

Cleveland couldn't finish out a deal with lucroy and didn't add a sp when both their well regarded 2 and 3 were down but they made the most significant addition in Miller but didn't even make him the closer
