Abraham Lincoln said, “Reputation is the shadow. Character is the tree.“ Our character is much more than just our reputation, what we try to display for others to see. It is who we are even when no one is watching. Having a Good Character means doing the right thing just because it is right to do what is right.
Why is it so hard to do the right thing? Not because you feel obligated to do so or are going to be perceived differently by others but because you truely believe it's the right thing to do.
Through my years I've met people who brag about being liars and cheats. Who from the outside appear to be of substance until you dive deeper.
Truthfulness is not easy. Having values and convictions shouldn't be an after thought.

People who pat themselves on the back the most in regards to their character tend to be the biggest shite bags out there, in my experience.

Very few people don't consider themselves good. Telling yourself you're a good person doesn't make you a good person.

On the other hand, starting a thread about being a good person probably will make you a good person. So, well done

Values and "doing the right thing" mostly went out the window with the decline of churches and Christianity the last decade or so.

As a Christian, it is shocking how much it's changed. Especially in the south.

I strongly consider myself a man of my word. Even if I know after the fact that it is going to cost me more than anticipated in the long run. Once committed,I'm there.

Most of the people I know that I consider men of character tend to think of themselves as incredibly flawed individuals who fail in these areas continuously. In other words, they would never publicly state they were a man of character, at best they would say the strive to be a man character and usually add the caveat that they often fail miserably.

Agreed, and if this is the only thing I ever teach my children, I'll be happy. Okay, maybe not the only thing, but it's really important.

He also said

Our republican system was meant for a homogeneous people. As long as blacks continue to live with the whites they constitute a threat to the national life. Family life may also collapse and the increase of mixed breed bastards may some day challenge the supremacy of the white man.
