Mainly just have fun, obviously. If you want to be competitive in the arena, there is a link on page 6 to a nice site that gives tons of info on who's best there. If you just think certain characters are cool, use them as long as it's fun.

But just a few general tips...

Be careful when leveling your heroes. Don't waste training droids when you hit your level cap. Use smaller and smaller droids until you just cap it off.

Do the daily stuff every single day. Too much exp there to miss out on.

Most say don't waste gems on chromium packs, use them on energy refills instead. But, if you like rolling the dice hoping for a cool character, go for it if it's fun.

Check the shard sources for the characters you want to star up. Some are much easier to get than others, and it sucks to use a lot of energy and credits leveling someone and then realizing you've hit a wall because you'll never get him starred up.
