The Air Force folks refer to their half as "McChord Field".

Kareem, you are right. I need to take a deep breath.

I did not join the Corps (because my scholarships were dependent upon maintaining really, really good grades, and I really needed those scholarships), but I have great respect for the institution.

As I said above, my grandfather was Class of 1937 (and obviously in the Corps). He served in WW2 and thereafter, retiring with stars on his collar.

Having the institution (and by proxy my grandfather) insulted as a "pretend soldier" by a low-grade moron who could probably not qualify for admission to TAMU got under my skin.

Breathing exercise complete.

Hey SwineTime.

Yell Leader Roy May is a 13-year Army veteran who served in the 82nd Airborne, among several other elite units.

Is he military enough for you, or just a "milk man?"

What was his job? The 82nd isn't just a division full of airborne infantry.

I just looked-up "McChord." Figured it was unusual and "Lewis" was too common for Google to handle. My bad.

good for him, i bet he wasn't such a prickly puss as his grandson turned out to be.

i'm sure almost all of us have family members that served- i know i certainly do. i'm thankful for them all.

No, but the 82d is almost exclusively airborne still.

I've met him, but did not ask about his service in that detail.

Interesting article on him here.

Among other things, he served in the "Old Guard," which I understand protects the President. In that capacity, he was one of the guys who guarded President Reagan's body when it lay in state in the Rotunda.

He was also a guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington Cemetery. Amazingly, he was also among the first to arrive at the Pentagon after the plane hit on 11-September, and he aided in rescue/recovery.

After all that, he went into combat in Iraq as a Squad Leader. The article says that he was part of the "1st/505th Parachute Infantry Regiment," so I assume that he jumped out of airplanes and then shot at bad guys. But that is just a guess.

Seems like a stand-up guy, but maybe that is just me. Probably just a "pretend soldier" and a "milk man."

Tell that to our US Military. They gave her Cadet General title. Who am I to argue. I personally would not stomp on a cadet general unless I hated America and her military

That's sounds like a huge honor. Oh wait....

Reveille made a cameo in the 1943 movie We've Never Been Licked, filmed on the A&M campus. During World War II, Americans could purchase a rank for their pet as part of a fundraiser for the K-9 Corps, a division that used trained dogs in active war zones. The cadets raised $100 to make Reveille a general. Enough donations poured in that the students commissioned a local artist to paint a portrait of “the General.”

So, any kid's pet could given the rank of "General?" There were probably countless pets (cats, hamsters, sheep, etc.) that were bestowed the honor of being a "general."

I wonder if any of the others that bought this rank through mail order also put their pets in charge of a fake army. Do you think they call all their other pets "general" because they purchased the rank that one time way back when?

Do you have to pay $100 for each new Reveille?

Lobo, his next response will be that you were not REALLY in the military, since it is "only" the Air Force.

lol The day of my enlistment we just got through with our final physical and a Marine was going over some final paperwork with guys from all branches of service and he called one of the Navy recruit a squid and the recruit called the Marine a jarhead, an Army recruit asked what they were called and the Marine called him a gravel stomper. Then in the back of the room an Air Force recruit asked what they called the Air Force soldiers and the Marine replied F.a.g.g.o.t.s. nuff said.

Well, a hundred bucks in 1943, adjusted for inflation, is like $1375.

Still, though, funny find.

Simple: The term 'pretend army' was invoked and aggy around here still hasn't developed the requisite thick skin to cope with it, so we got a bunch of 'mah diddy' stories and explanations.
