He really is a solid coach and LSU is lucky to have him.
Absolutely.
The problem with Les is that the idiots of the fanbase constantly compare him to the coach we had before him, who happens to be the best coach in the land.

The lack of competing for a national championship in recent years
What?
LSU went to the BCSNCG in 2011 and if they hold on to beat Alabama at the very end of the game in 2012 late in the season, they win the SECWest and have a chance to go back again.
That is pretty recent. That is called "competing."

I have a feeling Michigan is going to throw their wallet at him in December. Hopefully he sticks around, I'd be sad to see him leave.

Let's be honest. They didn't really compete that game.

Agreed. His success is certainly understated by a large number of a fans and media,

Upvote. I agree. Les gets crap because he followed the BEST coach in LSU history, but jeez Les is now at 2 or 3 right?
truth be told, Les is the best coach in LSU history. Saban may be the best coach in the country right now but Les at LSU > Saban at LSU.

I think its the way he wins the games is usually why LSU fans get upset with him. We watch other teams with flash and gimmicks win games. Then watch run it at you football with average offenses and great defenses and special teams for victories. It works and les has proven that but also a lot of heart attack games against good teams because this plan does not usually blowout good teams. Have to give credit to miles though he has won in the toughest division in football for a while now

As a life-long Saints fan, I've always liked State. You don't know what good fans are until you find the ones backing the teams that never win championships. They're dedicated and usually have a humorous perspective on the game.
But just like the Saints, State dogs, just like the Saints...

It's that a lot of the fans don't understand his approach. In another thread someone referred to 4th quarter Les voodoo, and someone above said he doesn't have a specialty. But the irony is that it's not voodoo, it's fundemental blocking and tackling football. Les tells the other team 'we're going to punch you in the face for 3 quarters, and then you will break.' And then he uses his specialty on the OL to make it happen. The collapses of the opposition in the 4th quarter are a direct result of that running game in the 1st. It's the same approach Berp is trying to install at Arkansas.
But fans are too impatient and want instant gratification. They get frustrated watching the first half of games while the offense imposes its will. They want to see fly patterns for TDs every play.
But get this, LSU has basically been running their entire offense out of their jumbo set - except for the 2nd half of the Wisconsin game when Les had to catch up. They're averaging over 4 ypc against 9 and 10 man fronts. I'm no believer in any 'secret playbook', but you've got to know that they have other formations besides goalline sets.

In a vacuum Miles is very successful, however since he happens to coach in the SEC West, where Alabama and Saban reside, all his achievements are viewed vs. Saban's, which isn't fair to Miles at all, but just how it's always gonna be.

Les does it his way, and his way is not too bad.

Les is a good man. A goofy fella and a wonderful coach. He seems to be a great daddy. I think those are the qualities that make mammas trust him at the kitchen table when he is trying to take their baby boys to play for LSU. He seems to really LOVE his boys. He knows how to recruit. He knows how to hire wonderful coordinators.

Miles has LSU squarely poised for a legitimate national title run(s) in the next few years with the new infusion of talent and the offense in Cam Cameron's very capable hands.
Me, and the majority of LSU fans in general, have grown to love the MadHatter over the years...yes he can be goofy, and we've certainly had a couple rocky moments under Miles that we've all wanted to strangle him, and at times he's not exactly a clock management wizard lol, but he truly has become one of the national "faces of college football." He's quirky, funny, classy, interesting, likeable, and most importantly he just continues to win at an insane clip....Since 2005 when Miles came to Baton Rouge, LSU is the winningest program in the SEC and the 2nd winningest program in the nation behind only BoiseSt, and that's during a brutal run of overall conference strength in the SEC. The 3 SEC championship game appearances and 2 BCS championship games under Miles were obviously tremendous seasons, but even in our "down" years under Miles we typically win 10+ games.
Miles' recruiting is exceptional, he is great at putting together a top-notch coaching staff (his current OC-DC combo of CamCameron-JohnChavis is phenomenal), and players seem to love playing for him... He is definitely a "player's coach" and knows how to motivate. He certainly knows his Xs and Os even though he doesn't get enough credit for that part of his game -, but his real talent lies in program management, people skills and his ability to motivate his teams. He also has a sometimes-unbelievable ability to quickly respond and recover from adversity, whether on the field in a particular game or on a larger macro level of program adversity. He seems to be at his best when adversity arises, which is such a crucial characteristic in CFB where consistency of 18-22 year old kids is determined by a team's ability to deal with the constant barrage of adversity on the field and off.
Miles stepped into a seemingly doomed and unenviable situation at LSU following Saban....No one ever wants to be the guy that follows an icon/savior.. LSU fans, including myself at times, have looked for every reason imaginable over the years to run Miles out of town because he isn't Saban, and it still hasn't happened 10 seasons later ... He just keeps winning, and even when the fanbase starts to get bored or critical, he finds new ways to energize the program and elevate its stature. Every year since 2005 like a broken record, many predict LSU to fall into mediocrity, and practically every year Miles finds a way to win 10+ games and pull in another Top10 class and upgrade the coaching staff and compete for the SEC West title. Saban certainly laid the major groundwork and built LSU into a power, but Miles has kept the program elite and actually taken it to new, more-consistent heights. Had Saban, who I believe is hands-down the greatest coach in CFB, had he gone to any school other than Bama, Miles would likely have 1 or 2 more titles on top of the titles he did win in 2007 and 2011.
Les is our goofy, grass-eating, non-English-speaking Madhatter!!... He's not perfect, but there's not a single coach out there with the exception of Saban that I want leading my program over Miles right now. Les has given LSU the most memorable and successful 10-year run in its history. Les did not have my respect in the beginning, but he has faced hurdle after hurdle during his LSU tenure and he definitely has my respect and admiration now ... as a coach and man. I'm proud to call Les Miles LSU's head coach.
