I think when he said something about protecting Patton from himself he meant preventing Patton from playing (when he desperately wanted to) because he wasn't healthy. If that's the case it's the opposite of the lack of gusto argument put forth earlier. I never found the mentally weak argument to be strong anyway...the guy had some pretty big wins last year.

Anyway, I ******* hope this incident from January ends up being nothing more than some fame-seeking student writer. Also, if our coach could start telling the truth, that would be nice.

Do you think Patton is your team's best QB when healthy?

No doubt in my mind whatsoever. To be fair, I've barely seen Freebeck of course but Patton has shown that he has the ability to compete. He's not a QB that is going to single-handedly win games but he will use a variety of different tactics to move the chains. Him being the best is predicated on Dorrell's willingness to bend his rigid West Coast offense to what Patton does well, though.

The guy can really scramble for yards. There is no reason we shouldn't be a run threat. Alternating runs between Robinette, Webb (this guy might be the real deal), and Seymour (if he can get healthy) should be extremely effective. He hasn't been an amazing long-range passer, but if they use the run game enough so that he's catching the defense slightly off their game, I have no doubt he can deliver the occasional long pass.

I'm not a huge fan of letting Freebeck get some snaps. I understand that he could be useful in a 3rd and long type situation or if we're way behind (not unlikely) and need some long passes to even have a chance. Still I think, in almost all cases, having any sort of 2 QB game-plan will do some small amount of damage to your starter's confidence.

Let it be known, however, that we could have Peyton Manning and Jerry Rice on offense this season and lose--our secondary is 100% clueless. They either wait for the catch and throw a soft hit, or they get called for pass interference. In that area, though, we do have to be honest about experience. I think I've heard we are playing more freshmen than anyone? Can't expect perfection in that case.

Dorrell wants to pass-pass-pass, but Robinette is very strong in the run game. I think Mason is finally taking some control over Dorrell, so we can hope that there will be a greater use of the run game going forward. We could really be successful on the ground if our O-Line would live up to its billing. All I heard coming into the season was how great our O-Line was going to be, and they just haven't performed.
