30-40 scars on a 4 year old and people think it's ok . How do you decide if it takes 20, 30 or 40 hits before the 4 year old has learned his lesson? If 4 isn't too young do you think it's ok with a 3 year old or 1 year old to get scars from a beating?

How is it that, if the world is indeed going to hell in a hand-basket, it is because of changes in the norms of society and not due to the damage those norms have caused? If indeed the world is turning into a gigantic vagina how is it not due to what happened in the past (spanking kids) and always blamed on relatively new ways of doing things (not spanking kids). It is uncanny....

This. I mean, yeah the whopping that kid got might of been a little much, but not enough to warrant fricking up AP's whole life over it.
Me, my bro, and cousin would almost always get whopped by my grandma on sunday's after church. She would hold our hand, and whop us. As she was doing this, we would be moving all around and stuff to avoid the switch, but she would get us good. I would get welps on my legs and arse and hands from blocking them.
I love my grandma so much and I would never had wanted her to get in trouble for disciplined us. But yeah, I think all these pussy arse women are against it. Well if your a single mother and your kid doesn't respect you or authority, it might be b/c you failed at discipline your child. Grounding is not a good punishment.

What AP did was child abuse. He beat the hell out of a 4 year old. That's not a spanking or discipline its a beating

I think human beings have always been selfish by nature. We generally seek our own gratification and comfort over that of others. But instead of "denying self", the past few generations have been taught in increasing amounts to embrace yourself (even your "bad" qualities), and to do what you want; do what feels good.
Specifically where child-raising is concerned, I believe the philosophy of the past 50 years or so has been to encourage the selfish and self-centered tendencies children have already by attempting to boost and inflate their egos and sense of self-importance rather than teach them valuable life-lessons about not always getting their way, self-sacrifice, or just doing what is right even if they don't want to. The issue of spanking is just one facet of this cultural shift towards hedonism.
I believe it is a moral issue that extends beyond spanking. Spanking is an "old fashioned" form of discipline that is neither good nor bad in itself, but must be paired with teaching children morality (right and wrong). Otherwise it is just violence for the sake of violence.

My great great grandfather was a tent revival preacher in the 1800's and lived to be almost 100 years old. In a newspaper article on one of his birthdays he was quoted saying "I remember when there was less than 300 miles of railroad tracks in this country and the telegraph hadn't been thought of. People had higher morality and were happier back then".
The man was basically saying the world is going to hell is a hand-basket 130 years ago. People have been saying that since the beginning of time and will continue to hundreds of years from now.
