I've been to the border bash for UGA/SC in Augusta...man it was crazy, I guess they're our real #1.

Thanks for the honest answer. Have you been to a tech game in atlanta before? More than 1? Do you think the fact that our fans take a week off from work to go play golf and hit the beach and party for a week makes the approach of that game a little different?

I have no clue. Do y'all play them the same week we play Clemson? Doesn't affect our passion.

quote:

In what possibly way can you quantify this?

It doesn't need to be quantified. I literally in several years hanging out w/ UGA grads every day have never heard a UGA grad just casually talk shite a/b GT. If you hang out w/ a Gamecock grad for 24 hrs you'll hear us blame the goddam weather on Clemson.

I did, though, hear many comments a/b UF and UF fans. You can take that at face value or not. Seems like you would, though, given your recognition that the U35 crowd doesn't share your views on rivals.

quote:

mentioned above. It's a fall vacation. We dont' take a beach vacation to play tech.

Yeah, b/c there's not a lot of passion there. If there were more, you would, simple as that. By the same token the same number of a team's fans aren't going to travel to the Outback Bowl as would travel for a BCS bowl. The level of intensity, passion, and what's on the line matter.

quote:

Could that be because UF has been a better football program the last 2 decades than tech? There's a reason they aren't talked about in football and it's because they suck right now. Doesn't that make sense?

EXACTLY MY POINT. Y'all can't sustain the passion for the rivalry when your rival is down. So y'all looked around and picked a new one. And now the younger generation of your fanbase doesn't even recognize Tech as your primary rival.

What!?! You've been to a GA/FL watch party in ATL? I guess you are well versed in the subject. I concede. You definitely know more than any GA fan would know about who our rival would be.

It's just another instance of many. Not meant to be taken as the sole indicator. Try to keep up.

Again, you are basing this off a few people you know. That's not the whole fan base.

How many people do I have to meet? Especially when the ratio so far is approaching 500:1 in favor of UF?

How old are y'all? Y'all really seem entirely unaware of how different the younger generation feels on this subject.

The vociferousness w/ which y'all disagree is the most revealing part of this thread.

I know y'all think it's perfectly normal to have 2 or 3 or even 4 rivals but we're perfectly content w/ just 1.

I think it has more to do with someone from another fan base trying to tell us how our rivals stack up when you have no real credibility on the subject.

In fact, let me float another theory. You personally are sensitive to the charges that UGA doesn't have a true rival and recognizing that to select UF would make y'all look bad b/c it seems more convenient rather than rooted in history, you always lead the charge to get everyone to name GT as your one true rival. The dog doth protest too much. It's UF. For now, anyways.

I think this is the core of it. A lot of people think, 'how can a team have more than 1 rival?'

IMO, there's A rival and then there are other teams you might not like. Each school usually has a rivalry week, when they're playing their 1 rival. Then schools have 'Hate Weeks" when they play teams they're not fond of.

I'm playing in the Golf Tourney again this year ... tomorrow. No idea what celebrity I'll be paired with this year. If the weather holds-out. We got an email a little while ago that there was a threat of a weather problem for tomorrow.

The Border Bash has become a lot of fun over the years. It's really grown these past twenty years or so .... hell, has it been twenty years? I think maybe it has. '94 seems about right.

dammit had a meeting. I hate it when work gets in the way of message boards.

yes.

Doesn't effect our passion.

ummm it doesn't affect ours either. Which obviously you wouldn't know, since you've never been to one.

quote:

I hear it a lot. Now what?

quote:

given your recognition that the U35 crowd doesn't share your views on rivals.

I realize that the U35 crowd doesn't know enough about UGA football. Losing to a school for 20 years doesn't make them your biggest rival. The people you associate with went to middle school and HS while we were getting whooped every year. I wonder how many of those people have been following the team before high school? How many have been to a game where we lost to tech?

quote:

Yeah, b/c there's not a lot of passion there. If there were more, you would, simple as that.

the frick are you talking abotu? We take a beach vacation to play UF because it's on a beach. We play tech in Athens and Atlanta. You're saying if there was more passion we'd create a beach to go to?

quote:

So y'all looked around and picked a new one

nobody has done that except the noobs who have grown up in a world where UF was better than us at the time they became fans.

First of all, holy hyperbole. You dont' even know 500 UGA fans, much less 500 times more than think it's UF over tech.

Second, it might help if you were more directly involved. You didn't go to UGA, you didn't grow up cheering for UGA and going to UGA games, against both gt and uf, and you don't live in GA. I, with my football background, would never tell you about SC football.

So you say something that's wrong, we say it's wrong, then have a discussion about it....then that's a sign that we're wrong?

UGA is quite unique in this regard. GT/AU/UF are all the "big 3", and each with their own reason. But tech is #1. Look at bama...their series with UT is one of the most storied and acclaimed rivalries in the SEC, but it's ok for fans to admit that AU is #1.

Btw, our "rivalry week" game is with tech.

I think the difference here is that you've stated multiple times that who UGA's rival is, to a particular fan, is different generationally, geographically or based on the status of that rival's current program strength... none of that should affect who "you" think your rival is. Gamecock fans in NC, GA and FL don't think the teams in those respective states supplant Clemson, ever. A Clemson fan in Timbuktu is going to blame malaria on Gamecocks. A Carolina fan in Canada is going to be ever so slightly miffed at the mere sight of the color orange. It just is, no matter when or where...
