We have benefit of seeing the play unfold from above. In live action his job is to get that ball and fall to the ground. There is no way he knew at the time he touched the ball that he had that much room. His motion was already set by the time he touched the ball. I do not think he could pull out of that dive and maintain control enough to get going.

IIRC he actually ran with it for a bit after securing the ball before going down. Wide open lane.
