Nah...there have been absolutely no rule changes or discussions at the pro or college level about changing or totally eliminating kick offs because of the increased injury risk.
Exactly.
Gurley returning kickoffs. :banghead:

Last year, none of Georgia's kick returners got injured during kick-offs.
Marshall was lost for the season on a routine safety valve swing pass.
Gurley lost time by spraining his ankle on (if I remember correctly) a toss sweep that he ran out of bounds.
The risk for injury on kick-offs may be greater for non-kick returners, but it isn't greater for the kick returners themselves.

You haven't watched much football in the last ten years have you?
Think of it from a physics stand point. When two objects are barreling towards each other at full speed the collision is going to be extremely violent, a lot of times moreso than plays from the los. Now take Gurley who weighs 230lbs. The more an object weighs the greater the violence of the impact. Why would you risk your star player when you have other guys uniquely suited for the role?

I really hope this doesn't happen. I think Michel or Mckenzie would be good at this and hopefully they will be able to prove them selves as freshmen and this would give them more playing time.

I'd bet a batch of fresh boiled peanuts that this doesn't happen.

Not afraid of injury. Afraid that my remote won't work after throwing it against the wall if he did get hurt returning a kick off.
Not a good idea.

I seriously have no idea why this is even a debate

There is no greater risk of getting injured on a kickoff than on running the ball 20 times a game.

To clarify, I'm not suggesting we do this unless we need a really big play in a crucial game. I'm saying, given the teeny tiny bit of evidence we have, I wouldn't be surprised to see gurley back there at some point in time. I'm actually against doing this for the most part.
FYI, it definitely puts a huge strength against a pretty big weakness of theirs.

That is recipe for disaster especially if you stick somebody back there fielding kicks who doesn't practice that OFTEN. Even someone as talented as Gurley will frick that shite up and mishandle the ball. Sorry but forget everything you have learned from sports movies and fricking Madden football games.

I agree with this.
I think all the backs should be in regular KR practices.
Tre Mason did KR for auburn. Most teams put their most dangerous guy back there.
We put boykin back there, secondary would be fricked without boykin but we put him there anyway, with great results.
All purpose yards wins games and heisman's.

1. If we were talking about punts, I would completely agree with you. There is no room for error on punts.
2. This is not the case with kick offs. If you mishandle the ball on a kickoff you have room to recover.
3. Gurley is our most dangerous player with the ball in his hands. Period. End of discussion. We get better with him returning kick offs so long as he doesn't get hurt.
4. By all accounts he is practicing returning kicks just as much as any of the other guys.

I don't even know what a Madden Football is but I agree that the top priority for a kick returner is the ability to actually field the ball...something we had trouble with last season.
Most of ya'll are probably too young to actually remember Herschell Walker playing but the goal line stalker returned kickoffs and punts from time to time while at UGA. Sure there is risk....getting out of bed in the morning is a risk, but the season is short and the stakes high...you gotta have your playmakers in touch with the ball as much as possible. Of course it ain't ideal but if it means the difference between 14-1 and 15-0 then hell yes Gurley should be returning punts, kickoffs, playing linebacker and selling popcorn in the stands during halftime as he plays second clarinet in the RCMB.....

The returner has the least chance of injury on a kick-off because he is looking for the guys who are going to hit him and has time to avoid the full brunt of the tackle.
It's everybody else who has a higher risk of getting injured because they can get hit from different angles and they are flying into each other.
