I'm in Gadsden... and I can tell you the bar/night life is much better in Gadsden and Jacksonville than Oxford/Anniston.
Beyond that though... it is all pretty similar in NE Alabama.
Don't buy anything near the projects or too far out in the sticks and it is pretty good.
Whether you live in Gadsden, Anniston, Jacksonville, Oxford or where ever... you are in reasonably short driving distance of the rest of them and you can hit Bham/Chatt in around an hour, Atlanta/TTown/Huntsville in around two.
Several nice scenic areas and golf courses too in the area.
