My boss is a legitimate USM homer.. Let me paint you a common operating picture:

"MSU / OM have been scared to play us for years"

"The SEC is trying to kill attendance and close down CUSA schools among others"

"MSU would've gotten their arse whipped during the Austin Davis era."

Can you imagine how bad this would be if we were terrible right now and dropped this game?

Southern Miss Why the hate?

Probably before your time, but they had a deep seated hatred for both State and OM mainly due to inferiority complex over the SEC.

They had some good teams and coaches and would really get pumped for their games with us & OM. They when into Oxford in 1970 and beat the #4 rebs with Archie at QB. Next week, they lost to State 51-15.

In one of Emory's best years, USM came to Starkville and blasted State 42-14 for homecoming and it wasn't even close. State went on to beat Miami (@ Miami with Jim Kelly at qb), Auburn, #1 Bama, LSU & OM.

They always played tough and if not tough, they played dirty. We stopped scheduling them near the end of Rocky's tenure and won the last two, '89 in Hattiesburg and '90 in Starkville ... both with ending FGs to win by 3.

USM started their 'Anyone, Anytime, Anyplace' mantra and the Miss Legislature discussed' mandating that OM and State play USM every year but Jackie was the HC and would have none of it. Southern would still continue to play other SEC teams ... 98% of time @ SEC school but refused same with OM & State.

Biggest mistakes USM made include firing Jeff Bower and not jumping to a different conference when they were still a good football team.

That one deserves a big * for Ole Miss. I was sort of on a recruiting trip that weekend. My brother was on the freshman team, and I was visiting. Manning was coming off of back-to-back AP player of the week awards, and Ole Miss was #4 in the polls. On paper, this was a HUGE mismatch. Ole Miss had to be favored by 35 pts.

They didn't take the players off of campus. They should have. Those guys got sooooo drunk that it was ridiculous. Many of them never went to bed and some went out hunting at 4 am the morning of the game. By the time they were getting dressed for the game, it was pretty obvious that there wasn't a lot of fight in those boys. Ole Miss was way better than USM. They raced out to a 14-0 lead, and then they hit the wall. USM had a 5'5" back that then proceeded to run all over them. I was on the sidelines. The coaches were pissed. The players just wanted to nap.

A loss like that one just wouldn't happen today. They manage the players actions too closely these days.

I still laugh my arse off from time to time when I think about this. The man did nothing but win against his conference, he fricking owned the CUSA.
I would love to buy a beer for everyone in on that decision.

By the way if you are over 30 and not poor Hattiesburg sucks.

And it's not even close. At least the delta has culture and rich history, along with blues music and excellent food.

The pine belt is a long lonely stretch of nothing. It's depressing I hate driving through there

I did but after I realized we beat their arse on like 5 offensive plays I actually felt bad. I mean it was so obvious Mullen used them as a glorified practice squad. This wasn't a pay out game was it? Then it would feel like we just whore'd out their team to test our new position players. Damn

I hate agreeing with you, but I do.

I'd much rather live in Clarksdale than Hattiesburg.

Even then, I'd much rather live in Oxford or Jackson than either of those two places, and that's not even close. I'd probably toss Ocean Springs in as well.
