I'm not sure how I missed this but after a while I did basically tune out Bama basketball last season. Who are these guys? Better question: Why did they transfer if they were doing so well?

It's asking a lot for me to be optimistic about this. I realise the potential is there but I just can't understand why none of these guys seem to have been capable of consistent production thusfar.

I'd have a heart attack if this happened. The newcomers may very well be awesome and help us play better but I'd be shocked if we saw significant improvement from the guys going into their 4th year.

Come on now, recent history should tell you we will drop at least one to Auburn.

Ricky Tarrant and Michael Kessens. They transferred because they are good enough to play in a big conference.

Confidence, especially Cooper.

OK that at least makes sense.

Like Bryant said, it's mostly a confidence issue. I don't think all 3 of those guys will take a step forward, but I do think 1 or 2 of those 3 will.

Not exactly. I'm a realist. There has not yet been a player under Grant that improved from one year to the next. If so, please name him.
We have been hanging hopes on new players every year only come March we are saying, "Wait til next year."
Since our AD decided to sit on his arse and keep Grant, while our cross state rival ran and picked up Pearl, we must face the fact that Bama basketball will remain mediocre at best til we take a new direction.

Releford would be the east choice. Maybe Retin would be the next choice.

I don't think many of us here were happy Grant was retained. But the fact is is that he's still here and we do have on paper talent. Maybe this is the year he proves why he was so highly thought of when we hired him.

Every new coach is a great hire until they start losing.

You mentioned one that improved dramatically in your first post...

No, you aren't. I hate how pessimists always use this as a defense. A realist would look at the talent on the roster and see that at the very worst the team should have a better year. You're upset about us retaining Grant (which is understandable), and you're allowing that to justify your pessimistic expectations for next season.

How can you the Swede didn't improve when he went from not even being able to catch the ball to making layups

I don't really get the optimism either. Pretty sure everyone in this thread (along with anyone who's watched Bama bball the last few years) thinks CAG is a bad coach. Even if the newcomers turn out to be good, I doubt they'll be good enough to overcome poor coaching. Hope I'm wrong though.

I'm with you. I'm not sure how anyone could be expecting us to do well this season. I hope I'm wrong.

ETA: Hopefully the fire grant thread will get unanchored for the season.

I don't think Grant is a bad coach, I just think he is an overpaid coach. Grant's biggest problem to me isn't even the coaching either, it's been the lack of talent and depth. I don't see the talent being the issue this year, hence the optimism.

I can't speak for the others, but my issue was with this statement
quote:

will result in several more losses off a losing record team.

Bama will be better than last season, and will certainly not lose several more games than last year. That's as optimistic as I can be for now, but do believe we have some upside to get in the tourney.

I'm not a pessimist. Pessimists would assume we will lose every game, or at least a large share of them. I'm a realist in thinking Bama will do no better than about .500 in league play and a little better than that OOC. What does that give us? Another missed invite to the NCAA.
Call it what you want, but do tell me what you expect, not hope, from Grant's team this season.

That statement is meant for last year's team comparison. Releford was an extremely valuable player for us over the past four years and his absence will be sorely missed. Lets all hope those that are replacing him will fill his shoes well.
I'm done with my rant.
