What's he supposed to say? "These QBs suck more than a $3 whore in NOLA, I can't believe I just had to pick this slapdick as our starting QB. I could play better than him"

I believe CBJ likes to temper expectations. His guaranteed bowl game and praise of Worley's play has me feeling good.

What was he saying about the QB play out of camp last year? That should give us our answer.

Further, let's not discount the impact of the Vols' influx of talented playmakers. Members of the Vols' staff estimated they utilized little more than 50-60 percent of their playbook at any point a year ago. Now? As two different people told us this week, Tennessee enters this season essentially with as much or perhaps more of its playbook at its fingertips than at any point all of last season.

Additionally, as we alluded to in Thursday evening's story focusing on Kyler Kerbyson, there's a belief that everyone in the offensive line meeting room is much more on the same page. At least three members of the Vols' offensive front have indicated to us it's a closer-knit group that's more in sync with Don Mahoney.

Speaking of the defensive side of the ball, Derek Barnett has been the Vols' best, most consistent defensive lineman throughout fall camp --- and you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone tell you that it's been very close. Barnett has been extremely disruptive ... to the point we're told Barnett had no less than three sacks just in Thursday's practice alone.

From EliVOL on VQ -

quote:

My buddy who is a donor took a customer to practice yesterday. He was there from start to finish. He has been to many practices over the years going back to Fulmer's early days. He said he enjoyed this practice more than any of the one's before. The reason why is because he was escorted the whole practice by Mikki Allen. Mikki is Dir. Of Leadership Support. Here are some observation from my buddy. Please note these are his opinions based on his conversations with athletic administrators, coaches and just his bird's eye view.

Nothing earth shattering but thought I would share:

This team is extremely young but big time speed upgrade.

They will be exciting to watch but will make some youthful mistakes

6-6 would be a great season but 2015 and 2016 will be contending for Atlanta

Barnett is an absolute beast. No way they can keep him off the field. At one time during practice he was having sack after sack and Butch stopped practice and yelled " is anybody on the offensive line going to stop him today" Butch's language got a little colorful

Butch's language was quite colorful throughout practice. he said he is very nice and calm in interviews but he is a bulldog at practice

Butch does not coddle anyone. He was riding Hurd big time and also the Berry twins big time. never stopped the whole practice

No way you can keep Kelly off the field

when the second team defense was on the field there where 8 freshman out there

freshman will play a lot and will have to grow up on the field

Scott looked good

Jalen Hurd lowered his shoulder one time and hit AJ Johnson and it sounded like two bulls hitting each other

Two guys that looked like grown men out there where Hurd and North- beasts

Robertson is huge- looked like a veteran

Future is very bright but young

Recruiting:

They seem to like where they are at with Richmond but Ole Miss is close second. No mention of OSU

Van Jefferson- tough one to figure out. momma does not like OSU. LSU has gotten in there.

Phillips- another tough one to figure out

Last year he was careful but far more sanguine all through Spring and Fall Camp in the way people read him. In retrospect, it's much more clear he was encouraging the players while giving the press coach-speak. Some in our press and among our fanbase read it as solidly optimistic rather than an attempt to say nice things about our QBs but if you review it it's clear he really didn't give much praise - let alone say anything that optimistic. Instead, he'd always say, "I though X did a good job today" and the next day it would be another QB he highlighted and then another etc. Often he'd say "Worley had some nice things today..." and also say that Dobbs, Peterman and Fergy did some nice things while highlighting the positive aspects of two or each QB.

This year he's been a lot quieter about QBs although he's still occasionally highlighted positives about them. However, it always appeared he was tempering things and playing far more coy. BUT for the most part he's withheld praise and imo dowplayed the improvements all of our QBs have shown since Spring. He's also challenged our QBs a good deal more than last year in the open portions of practice and tbh, every time I've heard the press act like the QBs were awful and then post tape I've been wondering if they watched the actual type or if they're just mouthing CBJ, who as you said, has tried to temper expectations this year.

That said, very often his delivery, obvious good moods, and attempts not smile have belied a lot of his tempering at QB and other positions. The press has went with his words and the fanbase hearing a negative framing by the media and downplaying of Jones.

Every now and then he let's his excitement about the team slip out. But the man has figured out how to work the media and I believe we're better off at QB than many have assumed as the videos have shown a night and day improvement, even back in the Spring, for all three of them. And none of them have to be world beaters with our WRs. Competency and getting the ball to our WRs is all they need (as long as the line doesn't get them killed and/or the calls give them a chance).

Worley has senior leadership we need and finally confidence. He may not be the most talented or the one with the most potential but given what lies ahead he looks to be a great choice and from what I've seen he's far ahead of where he was throwing the ball last year.

Great news on all fronts

quote:

Curt Maggitt was full-go on Wednesday and looked to have zero lingering effects from his rolled ankle he suffered a few weeks ago. Cam Sutton drew excessive praise from defensive backs coach Willie Martinez for his effort and “perfect technique” during drill work and coverage calls. Sutton has had a quiet but extremely solid camp at cornerback and looks poised to build on his outstanding freshman season from a year ago. Todd Kelly Jr. continues his hard charge for increased playing time at the strong safety spot opposite Brian Randolph. Kelly has the speed and tackling ability to play right away and will only get better as he learns the intricacies of the position. Kelly looked extremely fluid today during the work the safeties went through and appears to be grasping the scheme better and better each day. Calls and drills that confused the freshman early in camp are now completed with ease. I think it’s safe to say that it’s just a matter of time for Kelly.

According to VQ War Room

- Worley, Maggitt and AJJ will be team captains Sunday.

- Alex Ellis is questionable. Look for Wolf and Helm to get the majority of the snaps at TE.

- Jalen Hurd will be in on the first offensive series.

- North, Pig and Pearson will be starting at WR. Malone, Croom and Smith will be inserted quickly. Those 6 will be rotating all game.

- Expect for Todd Kelly to be named starter at SS before the end of the month.

- Cortez McDowell is getting some looks at weak side LB. Coaches love his speed and physicality there.

- JRM could slide into Mike linebacker on some passing downs. He knows all the calls.

It was weirdly worded but I think he meant by the end of September. Hope it's August though.

Yeah, he's probably our best tackler at DB already. The only thing with freshmen is picking up the playbook and Kelly knows it very well now according to Hubbs.

JMO but I think Kelly has the potential to be the kind of enforcer at safety that we've been lacking since EB14. Kid hits like a damn freight train and looks like a junior or senior already

(I am in no way saying he will be as good as Berry)

Thing about TKjr is that he's fast as hell too. There are a few tapes of him running the ball in High School and he's got one of those strides where he just glides and you almost think he can't be going that fast but then you look at the guys behind him. He's just super talented and Kelly is smart - not just football smart either. That's the kind of combination that can really make for a deadly Safety.
