I don't know if Smith will start over Malone or not but even if he does Malone will see plenty of PT. Smith has been impressive this camp - he had everything altogether last year, routes that were amazing, blew off his defender every time and then got a case of the drops. But the thing is he was still a true frosh last year and that kid's got legit 4.4 speed. He's actually one of the fastest on the team - probably right behind Moseley.

BUT don't think for a moment Malone won't be all over that field come game time. I don't care what anyone says - he will be there and he will get his catches.

Maggit was absent from practice again today. I don't want to panic because I'm sure that Curt could stove up his finger on a door and we'd be ultra careful with him but I don't like that at all.

That said, Barnett aka "Wonder Boy" is showing up huge in practice. And sense he's playing DE they may see this as an easy way to make sure Curt stays healthy while giving Barnett more reps at DE.

8/12 This is probably the best news of the entire update and should make everyone feel better about QB (per RTI):

quote:

Quarterbacks: After the live action portion, the quarterbacks transitioned into passing drills with the wide receivers, tight ends and running backs – all at various times. They seemed much more dialed in today as a unit. I only saw seven passes hit the ground throughout the three sessions and a few of those were easy drops by the wide receivers at the beginning of their session. No balls hit the ground at all when they worked with tight ends and running backs.

It just seems that this group may finally be playing with a level of comfort in the offense that we hadn’t seen to this point. By no means have they ‘arrived’ but most of the little mistakes that plagued them earlier in the month appear to have been fixed at this point.

Sounds like our WRs still need to get there on their routes but the TEs and RBs are doing well.

And for those keeping up with ever changing horse race Worley was mainly with the 1s, Peterman with 2s, and apparently Dobbs had some great passes as well.

As we have all been saying all offseason, I really wish Dobbs would take the reigns and claim the starting spot but he's got to earn it

Maggitt will be out for a week with a high ankle sprain I believe is what was put out.

He will be fine and should be back by next week.

Off Topic- Recruiting related, because frick the Recruiting Board that's why:

Jaylond Woods-2015 Tennessee commitment Jaylond Woods will not be eligible to play his senior season at Clinton. “Appeal denied: Vols commit Jaylond Woods will not be eligible for Clinton HS this fall after transferring from Lenoir City,” Jesse Smithey tweeted.

Woods — who is rated a three-star athlete by Rivals, ESPN, 247sports and Scout — was initially ruled ineligible by the TSSAA on August 4th.

Do we drop him? I hate for the kid to lose his chance, but this is bidness, not personal.

I agree with you. He's never been a great practice player though (good but not great) and I think that hurts him a bit. Still hopefully he can kickstart things, he won all the QB drills at the O&W (strength, accuracy, everything) but he may not be able to get into his 'zone' as chaotic as practices are. We know he's got the talent but something gotta click on where he demands it. He's young though, should be an RS Frosh really, and he will develop but I really want him to develop this year. We already know he's more than capable. But practice is where you earn it.

Can we win 7 with Worley? I'd rather Redshirt Dobbs if he's not not ready

We can win 6 with Worley, possibly more if the stars align. We're gonna be a run heavy, quick short pass offense this year. And Worley can do that - if he can develop a better medium and long ball then he'll be a solid QB. His under throws are what is scary - those are the kinda balls that get picked off and if I had to choose I'd much rather have Dobbs over throwing the WR than an under thrown ball. But if they choose Worley, I think we'll see a lot of quick passes and lean heavily on the run game. A decent medium-long and/or deep ball though is going to be needed to upset more teams. Opponents will have those short gains covered without a deep threat - will still pick up the short gains but it will make things much harder to have to rely on that all the time.

That said, Worley is getting better. He still has a few under throws but he's getting better at that.

Jashon Robertson is the latest newcomer to lose his stripe today.

Getting a lot of praise from his peers and coaches

I thought that Evan would eventually make that move. Hopefully he pushes the 1st string guys this year to play up to their potential or get out of the way.

More updates on todays practice

quote:

Butch: Jakob is playing outside linebacker now. He can run and hit. Standing him up was the right thing to do.

quote:

Jones: Curt Maggitt rolled his ankle a couple days ago. It's all precautionary. He'll be fine.

quote:

Butch: We knew Jakob was a project, but we know we're gonna like Year Two, Year Three and Year Four.

quote:

Jones: Jashon Robertson is very bright, and he understands football. He's done a fabulous job, and he's pushing some of our older offensive linemen.

quote:

Butch: Owen Williams is doing fine, but he needs to work on his conditioning, his stamina.

quote:

Jones: Neiko Creamer got some work at tight end today. He's a big-bodied athlete. We're just trying to find the right spot for him.

quote:

Butch: Maggitt won't practice Saturday but should be "good to go" Sunday.

Huge news. We need Maggitt if we're gonna have solid pass rush this year.

We got Derrell Scott back in practice today and he did some good things in goal line work. Scott's burst and elusiveness looked as good as advertised as it has all camp, but the ability pick up tough yards after contact was impressive.

Chris Weatherd can run...He's very explosive. You can see that he has a lot of ability, it's all about repetitions.

Thoughts from tonight's open practice Paul's Thoughts

First off, it was definitely a practice more than a scrimmage as some have suggested/posted and it was very vanilla and scripted in what they did. But, there was some live football and here are some thoughts.

I thought Worley had a strong practice. He made some nice throws, particularly one that was in the air for about 40-yards to North down the sideline. Dobbs and Peterman both had their moments, but Worley again showed why he was the starter of this team.

The Vols' playmakers made some nice grabs on the outside. North got vertical a few times, Croom is going to be tough to handle in the red zone because you have to play both the slant and the fade. He uses his body very well in the red zone and is going to be a very tough out there. Malone had one of his better practices and continues to show that somethings clicks when he's under the lights in Neyland.

The secondary got their hands on more balls than Wednesday night and some of that was helped by the physicality of Rashaan Gaulden. Gaulden made a few plays at corner and finally looks like he's getting closer to begin fully healthy and things are starting to slow down for him. I thought Dillon Bates had a good night flying to the ball. Up front, it was unfortunate to see Saulsberry go down and leave on crutches.

Overall, several young players in the secondary and in the linebacker corps made some plays and they are continuing to progress.

I thought the defensive line got good pressure on the night and you can see why there is optimism in with the young guys. They continue to get into the backfield. They will have to do a better job on contain, but for the most part I thought they did well and there wasn't a big run by a running back or QB tonight.

The offensive line had its moments and the coaches are still searching for the right combination up front. Tonight it was, from left to right, Gilliam, Jackson, Crowder, Robertson, Kerbyson and I wouldn't be surprised if that was the starting lineup next week.

Jones said after practice tonight that moving forward on Monday they will be with their starting lineups most likely in the secondary and on the offensive line and it's trending that Robertson will be in that group somewhere.

On special teams it was fun to see them go through a punt drill where they keep the balls they caught. Devrin Young caught five balls and Jacob Carter caught six. We will have that video, too.

I thought the crowd showed well tonight, too, and it was better than last year's and really helped the event out.

Brent's thoughts

Some quick thoughts from tonight after it's over. First of all, pretty vanilla on both sides of the ball in the 11 on 11 stuff as you would expect. The result was that the defense played faster and had fewer assignment issues particularly the young guys.

In the receiving crop, no surprise to me that Josh Malone had one of his best practices. He showed up much more and much better when the lights come on. Jones said his week has been much better as he's starting to learn how to practice. Marquez North is leading that group and not just vocally but also in his play. I thought he looked fabulous tonight.

No real answer at the kicker position as that battle will go up until game week I think. Saulsberry did get hurt, left with an ace wrap around his knee and on crutches. Jones offered no details saying he didn't know anything specific but it looked pretty significant.

On the offensive line, Jashon Robertson continues to play well. And will play a lot this fall. I mean a lot. The shuffle up front is on going and isn't settled there and frankly it's Robertson who's making it interesting in terms of who will start.

Not any full speed open field tackling so hard to say just how well the defensive played from that standpoint. They didn't force any turnovers in 11 on 11 work. Another guy on defense who is stepping up and showing up as he's getting healthy is Rashaan Gaulden. Gaulden had his best work of the pre-season Saturday night.

Tennessee is announcing 40k fans in attendance and there's no doubt that the young players and some older guys were extremely impressed. A.J. Johnson said it definitely exceeded his expectations.

John's thoughts

Butch Jones stressed as we walked off the field that this environment tonight was a priceless experience for his team, but specifically all of the freshmen. Jones told me he went to every table of players at dinner and listened to the newcomers all take about how this would be the biggest crowd in front of which they had ever played.

The offense was largely effective, and Jashon Robertson continues to look remarkably impressive for a guy who's been at guard two weeks. Jones said he's a guy "that's going to play a lot of football for us," and Robertson is certainly contending for a starting role. His work with first-team OL has steadily increased throughout the week.

Marquez North looked really good and just extremely difficult to defend. One drill in some pass skeleton had North being defended by D'Andre Payne, and Payne has by no means had a bad camp, but it really was an unfair battle. North easily beat the coverage at the line, caught the pass and quickly turned upfield.

I thought Todd Kelly Jr. Elliot Berry and Dillon Bates stood out in the second and third levels of the Vols' defense in terms of just getting more and more comfortable and making some plays.

Derek Barnett and Dewayne Hendrix continue to show promise on the edge. Michael Sawyers can do some things in the middle, but he's one of the guys that Jones has said must improve his football conditioning. Owen Williams busted through the line of scrimmage a couple of times and showed some much-needed signs of being a more reliable contributor along the defensive interior. Making that more important was the injury to Trevarris Saulsberry, which UT folks said they feared the worst on. Saulsberry had really been battling through some nagging issues, but his body language, the work by trainers and the comments of several UT personnel made it clear there is heavy concern regarding the severity of Saulsberry's injury.

Dylan Wiesman got more action tonight than in a long time, and that was both much needed and encouraging. Wiesman is a player whom coaches will tell you privately is very much a key part of the OL's depth and rotation for this season. When healthy, Wiesman commands a spot somewhere on the field and he's got good versatility between center and guard.

Matt Darr punted the ball fairly well, both early and in some drills. I thought it was crucial that Tennessee's return specialists also were good with their ball security, especially Devrin Young and Cam Sutton.

The defense won some third-down battles, but it was another productive step forward for the offense on a night when both sides of the ball were extremely base, per Jones, Justin Worley and several others. Worley was praised not only by Jones but multiple of his teammates told me he's got a really good command and confidence right now that is rubbing off on the offense.
