It's hard to say with how limited practice videos are.

I would be pretty shocked if anybody other than Worley was behind center to start the season. Crazier things have happened though. I still get nightmares from Peterman single handedly nuking the UF game

FWIW, Ainge and other media members that aren't affiliated with the recruiting sites seem to think Worley has done a decent job and ultimately gets the nod going into Utah St.

I will say that I don't think Peterman is anywhere as bad as he looked against UF. That was the kind of clusterfrick that we haven't seen since 2008 Crompton vs Auburn.

With that being said, IF Peterman gets the nod and lays another egg like that, Butch will probably start catching a ton of shite over his QB decisions. It's a weird situation honestly.

I'm just hoping that someone beats out Worley tbh. He's the same quarterback now that I thought he was back in 2012 when Dooley tried to bench Bray for a short period of time. Average arm, at best. Waits entirely too long to throw. Poor accuracy for a weakish armed QB.

I'll put it this way, Worley's high water mark last year was easily the SCe game. His QBR for that game was 55. If he had kept that same QBR for the entire season, he would've been ranked 80th in the entire FBS. Sheesh..

From Brent Hubbs on Scrimmage #1

quote:

Some scrimmage nuggets...

Remember the media wasn't allowed to attend so this is bits and pieces from talking to everyone we could visit with.

1. The offense had two turnovers. A fumble at the goal line going in on a 14th play of the drive coming off their own goal line with Peterman at quarterback so we are assuming 2's vs. 2's as Jones said that's how they split it up. The other was a Worley interception off a tipped ball that everyone said was a really good defensive play made all around with Brian Randolph making the pick. Otherwise ball security was solid.

2. The offensive line has some sustained drives. They weren't perfect but a nice night for them by all accounts. Jones singled out Jalen Hurd again for his play. Hurd had alot of yards after contact in the scrimmage estimates were over 50 yards after contact. Worley said his offensive front had a really good night.

3. Defensive end Derek Barnett again showed up more than once. He seems clearly the most ready of the young defensive linemen right now. Sawyers and Hendrix will certainly play this fall, but Barnett has consistently made plays this pre-season.

4. Dillon Bates showed up as well again. While he doesn't know everything he performed well in his first scrimmage.

5. Not enough explosive plays from the receivers and in the passing game which is surprising. But one interesting note is that the receivers don't go against the defensive backs in one on one or 7 on 7 settings in the summer. It's Jones and Bajakian rule because of fear of injury. Apparently they have had those in the past. That's one reason the passing game has been a bit slow to get the timing down at least in the eyes of the quarterbacks.

6. Tennessee held several players from the scrimmage. AJ Johnson, Maggitt, Kelly Jr who got banged up Saturday morning. McDowell, Scott also didn't go. All told over a dozen scholarship players were held out Saturday night.

7. Peterman is becoming an interesting story this fall camp as Jones and others noted he took a step in the right direction Saturday night and got alot of second team reps over Dobbs. Will be curious to see how reps are divided up next week.

8. Butch again noted Ethan Wolf as having a good night again and continues to draw praise from Jones.

9. Devrin Young had a really nice night with a couple of touchdowns and continues to carve a niche with the offense.

10. Elliot Berry was another newcomer on defense who everyone was talking about after the scrimmage.

Jones overall was pleased with the scrimmage. In talking to others, it was a good scrimmage where this team got better. Everyone noted that this team still has a long ways to go, but the first scrimmage of the pre-season was a really productive one across the board for Team 118.

Somebody's going to have to step up to the plate this year and take the reigns. I was honestly hoping for more out of Dobbs so far. Sometimes he looks like a genius and sometimes he just looks unfocused and off. If he could manage to grab a RS this season and continue to mature I think he will be dangerous in the future.

It's going to be interesting see the QB depth chart going into the season for sure. It does make me feel better that this is year 2 in the same system for all of them. Now the familiarity in the system is going to start to show. They should be making better reads and working through their progressions easier.

Glad to hear that the OL did well too. If they can play decent I think we'll have chances to put up a lot of points and really move the ball this year.

I think having legitimate weapons at TE will help the quarterbacks greatly this season.

From a guy on VQ at the scrimmage

quote:

First of all first scrimmage was better than the second one last year. Peterman played well. Hurd was impressive. Worley was fairly solid Dobbs didn't get a lot of reps. Malone needs to push himself harder, jones got on him several times but he will get better. Young played well and very hard. Pig had a great practice. Tight ends are much improved. Oline was consistent. Defense is MUCH better. Speed is clearly better. Barnett, Bates,Berry, and Mosley had impressive plays for freshman. Several assumed starters were held out. Overall impressive. Do they have a long way to go yes but they have time

quote:

Missed a couple of field goals. Punting good. Kick offs were all deep coverage good except for one. The pace of the offense was MUCH better

quote:

Secondary played good. No bust

The thing that worries me about Peterman is that he always practices well. He practiced well last year and he looked good in the spring (although no one but me seemed to notice) and now he's doing what he did in the Spring in Fall camp. He's a great kid the kind you want to be successful but... it's not just the UF game. Go back and watch the APSU game last year - Peterman was terrible. Every time he had reps during cupcake games he was terrible - he made Worley look good by way of comparison and Worley was looking pretty awful in those games. But after Oregon it was clear something had to be done - no way Worley could keep performing the way he was. And I think it woke him up a bit.

I don't want to write-off Peterman but I would be wary of letting him do more than share the 2 spot early on - give him a few reps in garbage time but I wouldn't fully invest in him as the backup (share those reps with Dobbs).

Now that might change if the coaches are thinking of RS Dobbs. I thought that theory was out there at first but Dobbs suddenly fading from the spotlight after being lights out at the O&W, the media pushback saying 'no, no, it'll be Worley' has me wondering if the coaches think they can get Peterman up to speed as backup and RS Dobbs. Remember we skipped a class without a QB so it would make some sense if Peterman can get there.

I'm still not sure I buy that theory but who knows... It's obvious CBJ doesn't want anyone knowing anything right now.

One other thing, Dobbs has consistently been inconsistent in practices. He's more of 'when the lights go on' QB than a practice QB which makes things even more difficult to judge.

Agreed on Dobbs. Once he can be consistent week in and week out he's going to be a really good ball player. He's still young and has some wrinkles to iron out. I do think he will get there though

This from Jones--

Elivol posted this on VQ. Wanted to share it just in case someone hasn't seen it yet. This from Butch today

quote:

Butch on The Nation

@Vol_Football: JONES: The open practice is vitally important, next Saturday night. Our great fan base will come out and support us.

@Vol_Football: JONES: If we could get 40-45,000 fans in Neyland Stadium, that would be an outstanding crowd for us.

@Vol_Football: JONES: Last night was very, very productive. We had our best day in training camp. I liked the approach and energy of the players. #Mental

@Vol_Football: JONES: The QBs are starting to perform as we expected. I'd like to get to point where we can name a starting QB this week.

@Vol_Football: JONES: We had more WOW plays this training camp, thus far, than we had all of last camp. But, we still have a long ways to go.

@Vol_Football: JONES: We all know we have a lot of young guys. We constantly communicate the culture we expect. We are hunting a high level of consistency.

@Vol_Football: JONES: Barnett is playing with a high-level of intensity and is a playmaker on defense. Hendrix and Mixon are getting better.

@Vol_Football: JONES: We've been thru 9 practices. I like the approach our players have had. They had a great challenge with class and practice last week.

@Vol_Football: JONES: To me, training camp really began today. We are checking into a hotel today. Our players understand the magnitude starting with 2-day

@Vol_Football: JONES: Marlin Lane is a great illustration of perseverance. He's performing at higher level. @YoungDevrin has been very productive.

@Vol_Football: JONES: @MrHurd_1 continues to get better and better and better. He's consistent and has toughness.

@Vol_Football: JONES: @EMoseley_4 has gained the 'freshman 33,' you don't gain 33 lbs unless you are all in. He brings it every day. He's a winner & champ.

@Vol_Football: JONES: @EMoseley_4 has gained the 'freshman 33,' you don't gain 33 lbs unless you are all in. He brings it every day. He's a winner & champ.

@John_BriceVQ: . @UTCoachJones (Competition) does make us better. Going through realities. But I like this fball team, like chemistry, like our brotherhood

@John_BriceVQ: . @UTCoachJones says @MrHurd_1 gets better and better and better. Pleasure to coach. Also praises @YoungDevrin 'factor grade' for every snap

@John_BriceVQ: . @UTCoachJones @VolBoy4 is great illustration of perseverance, resiliency. Dev @YoungDevrin has quietly really been very productive. #Vols

@Vol_Football: JONES: I like our football team, I like our chemistry, I like our brotherhood. They are hungry. We mate be immature, but we are talented.

@Vol_Football: JONES: We are coming together as one! I look forward to seeing everyone at Neyland Stadium next Saturday. #GoVols!

Hurd, Barnett, Moseley, and Wolf are the first 4 to lose their black stripe.

Boom. I'm surprised Whartonisnt on that list considering how ZA has been raving about him.

Hopefully Malone and Hendrix are up next.

I don't think Malone will get his off any time soon. So far he's kinda done like Dobbs* has and performed well under the lights (O&W/game time) but not so well/inconsistent in practice. For Malone, the issue looks a lot like he just doesn't get fired up for practice - his own talent is hurting him when it comes to self-discipline and I don't think he'll earn his stripe until he gains more self-discipline on drills and such.

That said, I don't think this is an attitude issue or anything like that but more Azzani and the other coaches knowing full well Malone is capable of so much more even if Malone doesn't quite understand that yet. They're riding him hard because they know, and more importantly he knows, he's good but he can get even better.

*Although as I said that, word is Dobbs had a good day today. And all the QBs are starting to take major steps.

Yeah, Rucker just said that as of right now, Josh Smith would get the start over Malone in a three wide set.

fricking stupid imo.
