I think the problem with OL isn't that they'll be super terrible - they probably won't be but that there's absolutely no one behind them to provide depth. We can survive rough line play *if* they don't get hurt and can just be meh or even on the ok end of bad (say bottom third of the league). What they can't be though is disastrous and we absolutely can't afford injuries there.

The QBs will be fine, imo. The WRs/TEs and RBs won't be stopped by even the QB play we saw last year (and we know Worley, Dobbs, and Peterman are further along than where they were last year - that much is true but we don't know how much further along just yet). The WRs/TEs are also good enough to make up for a lot, even bad throws (that just wasn't something the WRs/TEs could do last year - half the time they were the problem). That's why I think it's all about that oline when it comes to offense.

I agree about the OL. I actually think we will be just fine up the middle with Jackson/Crowder/Kerbyson but it's all going to boil down to the tackle spots.

And yeah, these WRs are looking sick so far. We've got an awesome combination of elite talent and very good depth behind those elite recievers. Let's hope Worley has improved.

I gotta admit that I'm most excited about what I'm hearing about the defense. Yeah, they're wet behind the ears and they're gonna give up some big plays because of that but I don't think we're gonna see the defense get diced up anymore when an opposing player gets around the corner.
Just seeing how quick and fast these new guys are in drills compared to some of the upperclassmen is like night and day.

I hope you're right about the OL. I agree with NorthGA that we will be solid in spots but we will see how the unit does. But absolutely can't have any injuries.

You're more optimistic on QBs. I know I might not be in the majority, but I still don't think Worley can be very effective as a starter in this league. This will sound cliche as shite, but he is missing that "it" factor and moxie you want in a QB. I guess we will see though because I definitely think he gets the first couple of starts.

I'm with both of you on the defense. That is really exciting news and I think there will be marked improvement within every unit, except for DL at first but I think those guys will grow up quick and do work.

At any rate, it's nice to have a positive outlook on team speed and only be worried about some units/positions instead of most of them.

Edit: sorry, sort of replied to both Prof and NorthGA

Appreciate all the info guys

Really good stuff to hear

I have a feeling the Oline won't be as bad as everyone over on the rant thinks they will, mainly bc I think the guys who were here last year were really overrated to begin with

Will they be good? Most likely not but I sort of doubt we are gonna have a HUGE dropoff

There was apparently a bit of confrontation that got leaders sent to 'the hole' today (per Danny Parker):

quote:

A dispute erupted during between senior Devrin Young and freshman RaShaan Gaulden. Both got in a couple of punches each before they could be separated when their facemasks locked up during the confrontation. Jones was so annoyed by the fight that he ordered: “All of the team leaders … report to The Hole.” Both players are extremely confident and neither backs down from a challenge. No news on what started the dispute.

Our boys got plenty of piss and vinegar in 'em right now. I'm actually surprised DY was involved but this kind of fire isn't something I see as a negative - our team has lacked swag for a while.

After seeing Devrin at Vol Hall a few months ago, I believe I'd pass on that confrontation. He's only like 5'7 but with bowling balls for shoulders and 2 freight carriers for arms.

No doubt. Devrin is a small dude but one who is tough as nails to do what he does at WR, RB, and PR/KR - he takes hits like they're nothing. I wish to God he hadn't gotten hurt early last season. Having a steady hand in the slot would have changed a lot of games and given our QBs a steam valve to throw to. If he'd have been ready to take over the slot earlier, Vandy would've been a different game. Because when North went down we had to rely completely on running it - still should've won even just running it but you know how that worked out.

Devrin is one of those players you need on the field though. I'm not sure why he gets picked on so much. He's a damn fine returner, fantastic in the slot and a fantastic at catching the ball from the RB position. I think it's because we've seen him come so close to going all the way on a return only to come up short but it's not like he wasn't giving us great returns or that he ever had a lot of special teamers who could block and help him out.

I think both Devrin and Wharton may wind up being our K/P returners and both should be able to do more this year with so much upgraded talent around them.

Free article on GoVols247 about Hendrix and Barnett
LINK

quote:

At least two of Tennessee’s highly touted true freshman defensive lineman have already impressed enough to get coaches talking where they’ll fit in the depth chart.Big true freshman defensive ends Derek Barnett and Dewayne Hendrix — both of whom were four-star Top247 prospects in the 2014 class — have already gotten on veteran defensive line coach Steve Stripling’s radar as immediate-impact candidates.
“I’ll give you a pair of names,” Stripling said when asked about his newcomers. “I think Barnett and Hendrix have jumped out, and they’re showing that I think they’re mature enough and physical enough at this point to where we’ll see where they can end up on the depth chart.”

God help us all....Peterman was with the 1st string offense today
Free read on VQ

quote:

Tennessee showed practice observers some full-team, 11-on-11 work in the early periods of Monday afternoon's practice on Haslam Field, and --- even if by design --- the Vols' first quarterback onto the field might have been a bit of a surprise.

Redshirt sophomore Nathan Peterman opened fourth-period team work with largely the Vols' projected starting offense. It's also interesting to note that Josh Smith joined Marquez North and Von Pearson as the third wideout while Alex Ellis was the initial tight end. The same starting five along the offensive front opened the drill, from left to right, Jacob Gilliam, Marcus Jackson, Mack Crowder, Kyler Kerbyson and Coleman Thomas. Jalen Hurd also got work at tailback with the first-team unit.

Additionally, Tennessee's second-team defense that was deployed at times was absolutely peppered with freshmen; eight or nine first-year players got reps with the second-team defense during team drills as outlined below.

quote:

For the first-team defensive, the Vols opened with Curt Maggitt, Danny O'Brien, Jordan Williams and Corey Vereen up front, although Owen Williams was quickly inserted along the interior. The second level consisted of A.J. Johnson and Jalen Reeves-Maybin, with Justin Coleman manning that nickelback/third linebacker role. The secondary was Emmanuel Moseley and Cam Sutton at the cornerback spots with Brian Randolph and Devaun Swafford at safety. Ethan Wolf caught the first pass from Peterman, and Hurd had a powerful run into the Vols' second and third levels against Johnson and Randolph.

In second-team work, Joshua Dobbs was the second quarterback in as several Vols staffers remarked that Jones had "fired warning shots" to his squad in shaking up some roster spots. Derrell Scott was the second-team running back while North, Josh Malone and Ryan Jenkins got early work at the second-team receiver spots. Jashon Robertson was the first positional switch, with the powerful rookie from Nashville flip-flopping from the defensive line to the offensive side of the ball. Robertson quickly gained some second-team reps at guard --- a position familiar to Robertson from high school. Devrin Young, Johnathon Johnson, Jason Croom and Malone were the second-team wideouts getting the most reps.

Malone made a dazzling catch down the left sideline from senior Justin Worley, going over Riyahd Jones to make the juggling grab. On the next play, Worley showed some leadership the coaches are seeking when a freshman route-runner engaged a defensive back and was blocking rather than trying to catch the ball that landed just behind him at his feet.

quote:

Allan Carson was gone from the team while sophomore reserve offensive lineman Dylan Wiesman returned to the active areas of the practice field for the first time since Friday. Wiesman had been slowed during the weekend with a nagging leg injury, spending Saturday in the 'Black Hole' conditioning area and being unable to go on Sunday. Alton 'Pig' Howard also appeared to just overheat a little in the early stages of practice, getting some attention from a trainer during the first half of the Vols' fourth session of pre-season camp. Similarly, Woody Quinn appeared to battle the heat elements as well.

Second-team defense featured: Derek Barnett, Kendal Vickers, Dimarya Mixon and Trevarris Saulsberry along the front, though Dewayne Hendrix quickly rotated in and continued to turn heads in the early going of camp. The linebackers were Dillon Bates and Kenny Bynum. Justin King rolled in at one point, and Chris Weatherd got some burn. In the secondary, Todd Kelly Jr., D'Andre Payne, LaDarrell McNeil and Jones were in the four traditional spots with Malik Foreman working at nickel while Payne logged some time at corner. Kelly Jr. and McNeil were the safeties. Evan Berry, Neiko Creamer and Cortez McDowell all also got early work with the 2s.

Tennessee also showed off its first-team punt unit, with veteran Matt Darr handled the punting duties. The Vols' shield consisted of O'Brien, King and Vickers. Coverage guys consisted of Michael Williams, Swafford, McNeil, Sutton, Reeves-Maybin and Coleman. The deep-snapper remains Matt Giampapa. Both Rashaan Gaulden and Weatherd were quickly inserted into the second-team punt coverage unit. Darr seemed to roar out of the gates to one of his best starts punting the football.

Butch pulling the age old mind frick. Trying to highlight that nobody's position is safe, promoting competition, getting the best out of his players etc.. and honestly it's not a bad ploy. When in reality this team is is leaps and bounds ahead of where they were this time last year.

ETA: Also, I'm not saying they didn't have a rough practice, because it sounds like they did. But most of this comes off like coach talk and wanting to see certain players to step up to the plate. I'll say this much, I think this teams surprises some people this season regardless of this practice report.

Agree with you TRUERockyTop. This is all about motivation, a little bit of tempering expectations, and seeing how players respond. Notice how the bad day that happened wasn't witnessed by the press during the open portion. We have no idea what they were even working on when the issues CBJ is talking about happened. But I really feel CBJ is trying everything he can to stress this young team, hit them with everything he can think of and try and force them to grow up as fast as he can in the time we have before the season starts. Nothing in the videos points to anything awful but again whatever happened today that was rough is said to have happened during the closed session.

Also as someone pointed out, it's quite convenient for a coach looking to light a fire under his team that this terrible day happened right before full pads go on.

There will be plenty of time for panic as we get nearer to the opener and more practices are in the books as well as throughout the season given the murderers' row we have for a schedule. But so far, I haven't seen much to panic about yet.

Agreed, here is one persons take on the situation

quote:

We’re not going to suggest Monday was a calculated move on Jones’ part, but let’s put it this way: We’ve seen him in much angrier moods than Monday. And even by the end of Monday’s meeting with the media, Jones was starting to backtrack a few inches by saying he believes this team can do what he’s asking it to do. He loves these players on a personal level. He loves working with them on a daily basis. But sometimes tough love is the best love, and this team’s going to get plenty of tough love.

It’s way too early to start talking about which newcomers definitely are going to help this team — the Vols haven’t even practiced in full pads yet — but some already are showing they’re ready to help. Perhaps the best news on that front is that freshman defensive ends Dewayne Hendrix and Derek Barnett have been impressing. The Vols need them, and they look like they might be able to help. They both already look like SEC defensive ends, at least in terms of physical stature, and they’re not timid. They’re going to make mistakes, but they look ready to help. That’s huge for this team.

Really excited about the DL this year. Vereen will be really good, and people forget what Maggitt can do if he stays healthy. DT will be solid, especially if Saulsberry gets healthy enough to contribute like he did last year. Really pumped about Barnett and Hendrix. Big athletic DEs that will contribute more and more as the season progresses.

The OL will be great between the Guards. I think Blair and Thomas will be solid tackles though. Just gotta stay healthy.

Worley will have a plethora of talent at WR, TE, and RB. WR is especially loaded. Looks to go 7+ deep with legitimate SEC talent.

Season will be fun to watch. The team went from bottom tier speed to elite speed. The new talent will help UT to pull off an upset or two. Can't wait, gentlemen

Regarding yesterday...

Right now I'm hearing Worley's underthrowing a few balls while Dobbs had the better day yesterday he's still overthrowing a few. CBJ said it was a 'worse' day for them on the passing accuracy front but then he backtracked a bit and explained some of it might be whether or not the WRs were running their routes full speed and so on and then backtracked even more saying "we have plenty of time to be game ready... they'll be fine tomorrow." So I don't think we have much to worry about just yet.

I'm optimistic on the QBs mainly because they don't have to be great or even good this year to put points on the board. Last year, they had to play perfect to make up for the inexperience at WR/TE and no one can do that. This year they have breathing room because they have so many playmakers - WRs and TEs that can catch even a poorly thrown ball plus an RB corp that looks very impressive and will give defenders hell.

That takes a lot of pressure off the QB spot and gives them a much longer leash.
