In all fairness, it was hard to predict Dooley would be such a bust. He did decent at LA Tech considering he was acting as the coach and AD. He did some good things for Tech and left their football program and athletics in general better than he found them. I thought he might do well at UT. Boy was I wrong.

The VolNation crowd believes in anything and everything. They convinced themselves he was the next Saban.
The bloodlines, being a Saban protege and being a southern boy was all they needed.
I never believed he was the answer. It was very obvious. I do not believe Jones will win any kind of championships here either.

As a UT fan in 2009, after kiffin bailed, we were only 2 years removed from a Berth in the SECC game. At that point, we were still relevant, and the debacle that has been the past few years hadn't happened yet, so we were blissfully ignorant. We had the feeling that yes we were in a slump, but we just needed to throw a fresh mind in there, get some stability back, and we'd go right back to competing for the east every year. It doesn't matter who we bring in, as long as he's competent. There's no way a team like ours, with our tradition, talent, faculties, etc, could ever fall from the upper echelon of cfb, right? Well no, we were wrong. We made a bad hire, and it set us back at least 5 years

Really? He won five games, than eight games, than four games at LA Tech. And he didn't stock anything- they won five games the year after he left. Maybe he was a good AD but his coaching sucked.
Out of all the major relevent program coaching hires the last five years, Dooley was the worst and its not even close. Given my expectations of him he actually lasted longer than I thought he would.

Thank you for the truthful answer. You Tenn fans are smarter and more honest than my deep south upbringing led me to believe.
So basically after getting dumped and a few no's you were going to prove any moron could win at Tenn (aka "a Brady Hokish hire?")?
That is understandable.
Seems like each major ancient power I listed in the OP that got screwed by OU had a phase like that. Makes sense Tenn had one too. Hard to find your way in an era where an Oregon can jump in line with fancy uniforms and shoe money.
Wish y'all luck next season.

He never seemed like a bad coach at Tech. For one, it was Tech. Secondly, it just seemed like he fielded decent teams for Tech but he just had too much on his plate there and couldn't fully focus on football like a head coach should. I didn't expect him to be all world at UT but I didn't expect him to flop like he did. The SEC was just too much too early for him. Should've spent several more years cutting his teeth somewhere that he could focus strictly on coaching.

41-18 is a pretty good reason for them too. That game was even more of a blowout on the field than the scoreline showed. My best friend who is a UT fan was at the game with me. Just seeing how helpless he looked almost made me want the beating to end.
As has been said without really being said by some of the UT fans, I think the biggest thing Dooley did was he kinda broke the mystique of UT football. With Fulmer, they only failed to win 10 games in consecutive seasons twice. 1999 (9-3) and 2000 (8-4) then 2005 (5-6) and 2006 (9-4). Fulmer missed a bowl game twice in 16 years. Dooley did that in all 3 of his. To a fan base with very high (most of them delusionally so), that just shattered all of their expectations in the worst way possible.

Just watched his postgame press conference after that loss to Vandy. I'm pretty decent at reading people and he didn't come across as disrespectful to the reporters or throw his players under the bus (with one minor exception). For a coach who just got his butt kicked I thought he handled it in a pretty professional way. His body language, tone, etc. didn't scream POS human being to me. Then again, when the cameras stopped rolling he might have acted completely different.

Eh we saw it. Just hoped it wasn't as bad as we feared.
He also improved every single year he was here, and had a season that was the best we had since joining the conference almost 20 years prior. Then he tops that season the next year. Winning masks a lot of underlying problems.
JLS and Dooley can be kind of comparable, I guess. I really don't hate JLS at all. He really was, theoretically, the perfect stopgap for all the reasons you said, plus he had tons of HC experience (including a few good years). He was a really nice guy, just not the answer at all. He was also going through quite a bit of hardship throughout 2012, with his bankruptcy and brother dying. I wish him nothing but the best.

I know people that were involved in football camps at Tennessee that say he was a real jackhole. It's easy to smile for the cameras and then turn around and be a total wipe when they stop rolling.

Dooley was a good old man
He lived below the mill
Dooley had two daughters and a forty gallon still
One gal watched the boiler the other watched the spout
Mama corked the bottles when old Dooley fetched them out
Dooley, slipping up the holler
Dooley, trying to make a dollar
Dooley, give me a swaller and I'll pay you back some day
The revenuers came for him a slipping through the woods
Dooley kept behind them all and never lost his goods
Dooley was a trader when into town he'd come
Sugar by the bushel and molasses by the ton
I remember very well the day old Dooley died
The women folk looked sorry and the men stood ‘round and cried
Now Dooley's on the mountain he lies there all alone
They put a jug beside him and a barrel for a stone

Honest answer to the question...he was a dick to the alumni of the program. Guys who fought hard to build up and maintain UT's program were treated like crap under Dooley. That, is unforgivable.

Like I said, there are stories about how he treated support staff in the facility that I will try to dig up.
Yeah, I'd heard through the grapevine here and there that he was a colossal a-hole inside the facility to support staff and pretty much everyone he came across. What's funny to me is that Dooley essentially carried himself like he thought he was Nick Saban when in fact he'd never won anything.
When everyone was flipping out last year about Dez Bryant's sideline tirade, I took a bit of pleasure in the fact that Dooley got pwned in the middle of it on national television.

Are you serious? He was 17-20 at Tech with only one winning season. Did you think Chizik would be a Hall of Famer at Auburn, too?
I hate Tennessee, but I really feel bad for their fans. They have a good, loyal fan base and a great program, and they didn't deserve Fulmer coasting on them, Kiffin being a carpetbagger, and having Dooley shoved down their throats by the Ivan Maisels of the world because he and his family appealed to the media. I'll never forget Ivan Maisel lauding Dooley and talking about how he won the press conference, and never giving up hope that he'd be successful.

Why would anybody hire a coach that just went 4-8 in WAC and has zero credentials? He even offered a huge buyout resulting Dooley walking away with $10 millions. I'm not faulting Dooley for taking the job. Hell I'd take the job too if they offer me millions in guaranteed money.
