Kinda like the three or coachs that followed bear Bryant.

Loyalty to Lou Tepper cost him his job

Can't look too unfavorably in hindsight, he left good players for Saban to start out with. And by all accounts he was a very likable guy.

He lost his OC and DC and hired morons to replace them as I recall. He recruited well.

Josh Booty happened to him. One of the most overhyped qbs of all time.

Bob McConnell (OC) was a horrible hire also

In 1997, LSU beats #1 UF, following game get blown out by Ole Miss. After game, Dinardo and DC Carl Reese have heated argument and Reese resigns at end of season. Dinardo brings in Lou Tepper, all downhill after that.

Everyone kept waiting for the defense to finally grasp the complexities of the Lou Tepper defense. Dinardo waited too long.
Dinardo was a good coach and changed the direction of the program, but his failure to fire Tepper cost him the job.
ETA: I was in Tiger Stadium when we beat #1 Florida in 1997, and that was the craziest I had ever seen the place. I'll always have a fondness for Dinardo just for that day.

I still don't understand how he was first team All SEC in 2000.

Josh Booty wasn't on the team in 1998 when LSU began the season ranked #6, won their first 3 games, and then finished the year 1-7. It was all Tepper. The offense was fine. Faulk, Tyler, and the rest of the offense were plenty productive. Outside of getting blown out the last game of the season when Tyler got hurt, LSU lost their other 6 games by a combined 31 points. They lost games scoring 36, 31, 36, and 27 points. In 8 of the 11 games, LSU scored 27 or more points, but they had arguably the worst pass defense I've seen in my life.
If it was all Josh Booty, Saban wouldn't have been able to win as many games with him as he did in 2000.

I'll never forget that game between Alabama and LSU that season. The Tide was down 16-7 with less than 3 minutes to go and ended up winning the game 22-16, no overtime required.

up 16-7 LSU has the ball on the two and we pass

His loyalty to Lou Tepper was his ultimate demise but he really was in over his head. He did a great job reviving the program & fanbase, getting the quality recruits in, & "bringing back the magic" but he reached his ceiling ability wise, the job became too big for him.

LSU football started in 2000, so I have no idea.

really felt bad for Faulk with that being his last home game. Had 200+ yards rushing and LSU had to lose yet another game at the end. Fitting end for LSU that season but really shitty for him.

Tepper happened. We moved on.
