I know, just saying he can really sling it.

He's like more of a point guard than a quarterback.

That's the most accurate description of his role.

I'm dying to see our offense with a dual-threat QB.

The problem is, there are very few DUAL threat QB's. The vast majority of guys that get labeled as such are single threat QB's, and the threat is running, not throwing. That's the LAST thing I want to see out of Bama's offense. We have tons of guys that can run the ball. We need a guy that can make passes. If he happens to be able to run too, great. But, that's never been a big concern of mine. There's only one ball, let the RB's run and the QB's throw.

in the spring scrimmages Sims was putting up lots of passing yards. I think he has enough of an arm to be a true dual threat. He's not Cam Newton, but he can make things happen with his arm or his legs. I think some of yall are underestimating his arm talent. I just dont think the coaching staff would have kept him at QB for all these years if they didnt think he had the ability to be a competent passer.

I agree with you. I too think that Blake Sims is a real dual threat. He's probably also a very focused and vocal leader of this football team. I'm a huge fan of Blake Sims and I believe in him. He's a winner.

Non-VIP post from signusup, one of the true insiders.

quote:

signusup 177 posts 2 hours ago Too much worry has been circulated following last Saturday’s scrimmage. That happens when you have more eyes on the field from REC members and donors who don’t view more than one practice…

The scrimmage did not provide much support for either quarterback with the running game. It wasn’t used often by design, and no running back stepped up to take pressure off of the quarterbacks. Both quarterbacks had numerous drops from the receivers that will absolutely kill any attempt at developing a rhythm. Both Sims and Coker can scramble and make plays with their feet. Right now, Sims is more apt to do so and Coker is trying to spend more time in the pocket to make his reads. Coker can be a real weapon when he runs and while Sims can break loose, he will need to cut down on “Happy feet” in the pocket during games…

Right now, Sims is better in the middle of the field and seam routes with his touch. He knows the offense and has done a good job. He does the same thing in practices but doesn’t make all the throws, although he has improved… Coker is much better on out patterns and down the field. His arm strength is his weapon and as his knowledge of the playbook and recognition skills increase, so will his consistency. He hasn’t become as big of vocal leader yet and is trying to ease himself into that roll while winning over the respect of others. But he IS a likable guy and easy to get along with…

Watching practice, Coker has had some outstanding days. Sims has as well. There have been some average days, but no bad days. But when everything is scripted, you can make yourself look pretty good if you execute. It’s when things aren’t going your way or you are faced with situational downs that your skills and decision making will have to be displayed. Whoever can execute in game situations is who will run this offense. There will be a defining moment for one of these guys early and the light will come on and there will be no looking back… And for all the concern in years past expressed by the coaching staff or Coach Saban over the OL, or DB’s, or depth or what have you, how concerned has he seemed this year over the quarterback situation? Aside from the continued questions on the matter…he just isn’t worried about it…

Most of these things slant pro-Coker. From secret reports of Saban already selecting him to reports saying "I know Sims has outperformed BabyMontana.... but but it's BabyMontana!".

It will be funny when Coach Saban goes with Sims and Sims holds down the fort. People will melt. Saban is all about loyalty and Sims has worked hard and well. I wish the dude could shock the world and win it all.

One thing we will have with both of these guys at QB. The back side pursuit won't be running down any stretch plays, because unlike Mc Carron Coker and Sims will make them pay.

You won't see teams going all out pass rush like OU did either. If that little pass rusher of theirs tries to run around the OT he can watch the QB get upfield for a nice run through the place he just vacated.

The only reason people will melt is if he is the starter, has bad performances, and the staff because of loyalty leaves him in there without giving Coker a shot. I was never on the Coker train as many but from what I have seen, Sims has yet to pull himself ahead of Coker, that leaves no doubt he should be the starter. That with a guy that has been here at UA going on his 5th year still can not reach the top to win the job says a lot to me. Especially considering Coker has just started practicing with the team and still has the starting QB job in his sites. Sims may start vs. WVU and maybe see more meaningful playing time this fall because he as stuck it out, but not being able to surge far enough ahead at this point I truly believe Coker will win the job by the UF game. Again I have never been on the Coker hype train, but that loyalty will only last so long.

And FTR I want to see the best QB on the field and will 100% support either one.

The flipside to that argument: if Sims is as bad as many people are convinced that he is, it should've taken no time at all for Coker or Bateman or Morris or anyone really to beat him out for the job. Shouldn't have taken long at all. And while Coker hasn't been with the team that long, he's not exactly coming straight from high school either. He's been a collegiate QB for 3 years just like Sims. He's been versed on college-level film study, reading defenses, calling audibles, sliding protections, ball security, etc... And while he's new to Bama, he spent those 3 years under a Saban protege who is considered a top-rate QB developer.

At any rate, the battle is going to continue into the season. Hopefully at least one of them will shine under the Georgia dome lights and we can move on to discussing something else.

No one will melt. No one gives a single frick who the QB is as long as he wins.

I think the dynamic no one is talking about is the role Sims has played for years and how much he is loved on this team. The staff cannot simply "anoint" Coker as the starter. Doing so could have a negative impact on team chemistry.

Sim is universally loved. Every player loves the guy. They have to give him every opportunity to win the job - visible so in practice and in the media - so players know he was given a chance.

Ultimately, Coker will be the QB1 by the time Florida game is played (if not sooner) and by the end of the season I think we'll all look back at this thread and laugh at the angst that was expressed over who the QB would be.

(FTR - I like Sims a lot. He could get the job done, but he's not the long-term solution and, therefore, I don't think he'll be the short-term solution either).

You probably don't because you are an educated fan, but trust me it is some in the Bama Nation(a pretty large section) who are going to b!tch and moan if Sims holds down the fort. Regardless if we are winning or not.

I still am not convinced as yall that Coker is the guy. The guy just isn't that accurate from everything we have to go by. He has a strong arm, no doubt, but he misses a lot of easy throws. I'm just not anymore convinced of him than I am of Sims.

The flipside to that argument: if Coker is clearly the better QB as demonstrated in practice after practice and rep after rep and therefore gives the TEAM the best chance to win, wouldn't the players be upset that he's not being given a job he has clearly won? I'm sure they like Sims but they've busted their tales to be able to go out there and win football games and compete for a championship this year. I doubt any of them would want Sims to start if Coker had proven himself to be the better option.

That's why this thing was always going to last into the season. IF Coker is the better option, Saban won't just tell the team. He'll play both QBs and let them see for themselves who is better, and whoever is better will play.

Dom Jackson back at practice too

I think today was first day of classes. Wonder if TW's suspension was somehow tied to that
