Because he used to slay the pussy with Spurrier back in Gainesville, earning the moniker "Big Game". Little known fact: spurrier is known amongst his peers as " Big Wang Steve".

the big game moniker kind of started when he was DC at florida and they won the national title against FSU after being demolished by nebraska the previous year(with a different DC). he gets the job at oklahoma and turns that program around. he owned texas, won a national championship and then a rose bowl against washington state. the wheels fell off against kansas state, and things got worse against LSU and USC and the nickname is used sarcastically.
