Of course you couldn't. The interstate does not pass through the middle of Columbia, Mo. Its beauty has been preserved.

Preserved or best avoided? Most places that are worth visiting have interstates actually leading to them and not trying their damnedest to avoid them...

Columbia, SC has garnered its fair share of All-American City awards over the years. We get compared to Charleston a lot but that's not really fair considering Charleston is always listed as one of the nicest places to live in the U.S. yetno one ever mentions North Charleston in the same sentence.

Charleston has done a good job of "dividing" the dangerous parts of town, North Charleston, from the nice parts Downtown, Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island and the beaches. Some of that is obviously naturally done due to all of the water.

The only integrated parts are James Island and West Ashley and they remind me a lot of the Columbia area.

One road can go from a nice neighborhood into the ghetto in two blocks.

I lived there for a couple of years and liked it very much. Pretty damn racist, though.

Ummmmmmm ... okay, maybe, in some places at times. We all seem to get along here pretty well though. Are you talking black racism or white racism btw?

Anyway, we do hate yankees if that is what you are talking about?

We've had a lot of the old stories passed down to us over the decades: Sherman's Revenge (on Columbia, SC)

If you don't feel like reading the transcript above, here's the short video. Watch some of it and you may understand some things better: Sherman's Revenge: The Video (10 mins)

You know, it is interesting to see the hatred for Sherman that still exists here among the people that have established family history in Columbia.

Everyday growing up, I drove by (and still drive by most days) the entrance to the ruins of Wade Hampton's plantation, Millwood on the SE side of Columbia. I would have loved to have seen that mansion intact.

Don't really have experience of the city. Sucks that they're stadium is in the middle of nowhere and I never really got to see the campus. Planned to go out to the bars but seeing how we were depressed and the way the fans were acting we decided to GTFO that night. Good pregame atmosphere though.

Columbia is a great place. I loved it. Take this as constructive criticism, but it's the God's honest truth. I've lived in Texas for 42 years and Columbia for 4 years (this was about 3 years ago). In my 4 years in Columbia, I had a barber, a realtor, a waiter, and a bar tender - all complete strangers - each say very racist things to me, expecting me to be okay with it. (Three of them referred to blacks as ****s, and the realtor told me that a "good white family" lived next door.) In each case, I was astounded. I know there is racism everywhere, but in 42 years living other places, I never had a stranger assume that I would be okay with that kind of talk. In 4 years in Columbia, I had four strangers say that kind of thing to me. It was shocking.

I live about 70 miles away from Columbia. I have a lot of close friends who graduated from SCAR, so I tend to make a trip or two each year. I’ve experienced the good and bad of Columbia.

The bad? My car was trashed after the Cocks murdered UGA 2 years ago. I won’t harp on this topic since I’m sure it will piss of the masses.

The good? As long as you have someone in your party that knows the “bad places”, then you’re fine. The bar scene isn’t Athens, GA but it’s not terrible. I always have fun, but that’s what alcohol is for.

Overall, it doesn’t have that SEC feel since it’s spread out, but their tailgating has improved. In general it’s a cool place to visit. If you plan on staying for a long weekend and have never visited Charleston, you should consider it.

It's nice. As all have said, it has its good parts and bad.I've lived in Cola about 6 months, and in Sumter the other 24 years

The good-
Women
Location:
1 hour North-Carowinds/Charlotte/Greenville
1.5 hours East-Myrtle Bach/Charleston
2.5 Hours West- Augusta/Atlanta
Decent bar scene( or so I've heard. I don't drink)

Traffic isn't that bad for a major city(unless you're on 1-26/I-20 after 7:45am)

Bad:
There are of course bad areas (I'm living near one atm). Save for a couple of expensive apartments, everything East of the stadium is a ghetto for example, and doesn't look well if you're an out of towner driving in. But it's not like driving through Memphis.

Tons of STD's.

I would say there's not a whole lot do. There's the Zoo and a boatload(intentional pun) of rivers/lakes around the city to do stuff on, but than that, not much here imo.

Racists are of course here, but I haven't had anyone make a a comment to me personally in good while. It's very much an educated, working city to me. (Could use more companies though, there's basically Blue Cross, and the state government. Course just be bitterness from me talking because of where I went to school).

Lived here my whole life, and sure I've heard racists remarks but never by anyone who was a stranger and just expected it to be cool. Especially someone who was a professional talking to me as a client as your examples are.

Not saying it doesn't happen. Sure there are racists here.. but I've never witnessed be so open, expected or accepted.

Columbia, SC has the best tap water out of any SEC state. That's a fact.

That's great to hear. Maybe I just had a weird run of bad luck. Like I said, I loved the place overall!

You must have been putting-off racist vibes ... you know, the whole racist radar thing. Like gaydar except for racists.

I do always get a kick outta the whole racist hypocrisy thing though. I guess I'm just getting old. Racists are everywhere and it never fails ... the worst ones are always the ones that scream it the loudest. Jesse Jackson, Al Sharp ton, Hugh McElroy, et al.

Oh, and BTW, if you wanna hear the n***** word just watch a movie on EBLK or listen to a rap song, if you can call'em songs. I call'em rap chants ... but I'm old and dgaf about all the political correct hypocrisy these days.

The different races get along just fine around here. For the most part we're friends ... better than in most places, I know that for a fact.

It's like a slightly larger Macon, Georgia…

A couple nice places and historic areas, but trash other than that.

If you wanna play with numbers, the population of Cary's CSA is 1,998,808.

South Carolina has weird laws that make it difficult for cities to annex surrounding areas. It is quite common in SC for double or triple the population of a city to be considered outside of the city limits and yet have an address for that city. Therefore cities and towns are generally much larger than what is listed and trying to paint Cary as larger city than Columbia would be misleading.
