I think the fact that Louisiana has an NFL team also plays into this. So many kids grow up diehard Saints fan but not LSU fans. In Mississippi/Alabama, your college team is first and NFL second if you even have a favorite NFL team.

Most kids in Mississippi grow up die hard Saints fans too. Louisiana doesn't have a natural collegiate rival though in state so there is definitely something to be said for most kids in Mississippi growing up in families that have allegiance to State or OM.

Louisiana produces more D-1 talent than any state not named Florida, California and Texas. Unlike any of those states, there is only one in-state school.

This creates an environment where LSU can never "win them all" but it also creates an environment where we can pick and choose our battles.

We all know Trooper got banned from campus after the Trovon Reed and Greg Robinson deal down in Thibadoux where he just so happened to download "Facebook for iPhone" while on his AU visit and Trovon's "father figure" magically had money to cart kids all over the South to watch AU games while working as an oil change tech at Wal-Mart (seriously, look it up).

But even beyond dirty recruiting, Saban has always done this. He turned Mobile into LSU country with kids like JaMarcus, and recruited Melvin Oliver out of AL as well. He pilfered MS as well for kids like Chevis Jackson. He's known for recruiting nationally, but also for finding your weak spot and getting kids out of there.

His skill at strategy knows no bounds, whether on the recruiting trail, on the field or building a program.

So whether it's LSU simply not having enough spots each year, kids getting paid, or coaches who are flat out the best at what they do, it's going to happen. There's too much talent in Louisiana not to see kids walk each year that might impact our program if we could have gotten them.

Re: Cameron Sims, this kid was not anywhere as highly ranked as Quinn or Dupre, and Upchurch is neck and neck as an out of state take. Re: Hootie Jones, we upgraded by taking a more highly ranked out of state kid in the 5 Star Ed Paris who was also an early enrollee. In almost all cases, LSU has the ability to replace losses like that with comparable talent if not an outright upgrade in terms of rankings. No doubt a kid like Cam hurts, but last year we signed a Samoan defensive lineman whose brother is a 5* OL in Texas this year and committed the same day bro inked for last year.

It all works out.

One at a time.
Trevon Reed --- Overrated, LSU recruited better receivers
Greg Robison.. LSU wanted badly, but whiffed.
Deangelo Benton.. LSU backed off because of Rueben Randle
Daquille Williams. LSU backed off because of Quinn, and questionable attitude.
E. Lacy did not have the grades, but Bama found a way to get him qualified.
Sentimore.... LSU backed off because of attitude.
Sylve......Would never see the field at LSU. Another player recruited by Bama to help the sign Fournette. Saban is slick.
Kenny Bell....Would never hit the field for LSU. If he sticks with LSU on signing day LSU ends up with the #1 class instead of Bama.
Landon Collins.....Big time loss for LSU.
Devall.... Better suited for Bama's defense.
Timm Williams..... LSU passed on him because of attitude. Bama recruit for perception that Saban makes headway in Louisiana.
Falkins....Not offered by LSU. Another Bama recruit for perception that Saban makes headway in Louisiana.
Cameron Robinson....Big time LSU loss. If he CROB does not make it in the NFL, he should hope to find work in ALabama.
Hootie.... LSU backed off because Jamal Adams commits to LSU. Adams considered better player.
Cam Sims....LSU signs Quinn, Dupre. Who cares where Cameron Sims plays football.
SO, it is my opinion that LSU has only lost three players that they wanted badly. Greg Robinson, Cameron Robinson, and Landon Collins. I have learned not to question Les Miles and staff on players that have left Louisiana and signed with other schools. Les seems to sign high character players with talent.

The Mississippi kkk can make very strong cases for kids not going ANYWHERE!!!! Especially if those recruits have families and/or loved ones...

You're full of shite, but I'll just point out Chevis Jackson wasn't from Mississippi.

Trovon Reed (5*) - Mom just died and was looking for a change of scenery.

Greg Robinson (4*) - Free Iphone?

DeAngelo Benton (5*) - LSU choose to please Ruben Randle over him.

D'haquille Williams (5*) - Supposedly high school WR's LSU were recruiting weren't to keen with having to compete with Williams so they backed off. This guy is awesome but he's a headcase. I've seen him 3 times in high school, twice he was ejected and the 3rd time he was MVP of an all-star game.

Eddie Lacy (4*) - LSU barely recruited him cause it looked like he wouldn't qualify, and had higher ranked back committed in Michael Ford. Also turned down a higher ranked back in Christian Michael, and went all out for Trent Richardson.

Darrington Sentimore (4*) - LSU didn't offer until last minute because he looked like he would barely qualify if at all.

Bradley Sylve (4*) - LSU coveted a number of other receivers over Slyve he was a backup plan.

Denzell Devall (4*) - Was pretty obvious he was a better fit for a 3-4 rather than LSU's 4-3.

RaHeem Falkins (4*) - Not offered by LSU

Cam Robinson (5*) - Alabama has put out quite a bit more OL than LSU has recently, as much as I hate it, I get his decision.

Cameron Sims (4*) - Not offered by LSU

Bottom line, Louisiana produces a ton of talent, and LSU gets somewhere like 80-85% of instate talent it offers and recruits hard. Which is damn good. Sometimes a few get away. Sometimes LSU evaluates and doesn't see the same things other staffs do. Sometimes players just don't fit what LSU is trying to do. Sometimes LSU prefers other guys and sometimes guys just want to get away from home.

The real question is how many of those guys would have actually contributed at LSU. Sure you have a Greg Robinson or Landon Collins that would have been great here, but the majority of those guys didn't pan out like they were billed to.

Greg Studrawa was in charge of part of LA, which was a mistake on LSU's part.

Also, Saban certainly still has a huge pull in the state of LA.

For the record, Louisiana is the best football state in the modern era, in terms of population percentage/produced talent. Mississippi is also very good, esp historically, but it's not regarded as high now because of it's small population, retrograde HS coaching, and the fact that MS is the most hated state by the media outlets. Both fanbases in MS are as passionate as as any in the SEC, with the exception of Bama. The facilities are also good, especially at State, even though the stadium is about 60 percent the size of Tiger Stadium, but that's basically the only difference in facilities. The football op center at State is as nice as just about anybody's in the country.

There is something else the OP doesn't know about MS, people here are born with either a Rebel or Bulldog stamped on the butt. Even the ones that aren't are going to be heavily influenced if they happen to be a coveted athlete. There's 3 million people here, so there's a lot of pride that both fan bases carry within the state and most of the players want to represent their home state. The other reasons have been covered in the thread.

Kids from south Mississippi take some convincing though because there are a lot of LSU fans in south Mississippi.

And inexplicably Bama also. I'd like to punch those crickets in the throat sometimes. Asked one of them idiots if, since he was Bama fan, he must have seen a lot of Bama games and be connected to the university in some way other than just seeing those arse hats on TV and hearing all about their greatness in the media? His response, "hell yeah! We go watch 'em alll the time in Birmingham!"

So you are saying that MSU was clean in the Cam Newton recruitment? Methinks someone is whistling past the graveyard. It might not have been the coaches but the Alums had dirt under their nails on that deal. Who is the stupid one here? Find a mirror.

Someone explain to me how 2 schools with less success on the field, inferior facilities and coaching vs Alabama and LSU can change a kids mind so quick.

Previous regimes at some schools mentioned in the previous post became extremely adept at funneling funds through local churches.

Cam's Pappy's church getting repaired while on the brink of condemnation by the municipality it was in was a good example...
