We have 3 tight ends in the NFL

Jason Witten
Luke Stocker
Mychal Rivera

And we just signed the number 1 tight end class in the nation. It is one area we have been pretty solid in, even recently.

QUick check on ESPN shows UGA has 3 tight ends currently on NFL rosters.

So SCAR and UGA have the most TEs on active NFL rosters right now?

ETA: And the Vols. Three each for SCAR, UGA and the Vols. SEC East TE Division!

Demarcus Dobbs

Dobbs played defensive end at UGA so I don't know if we can count him. Don't think he's caught a pass in the NFL either. We still try to use the tight end position. Unfortunately last year Rome was hurt, and Artie dropped at least one pass a game. I think Blazevich will be utilized at the TE position over the next for years very well though.

AJ Derpy? He moved to tight end?

Yeah and he actually looked pretty good there in the spring. He flew up the depth chart and looks to be #2 behind Henry right now.

They were certainly forgotten about under Joker. Last season they were utilized about as much as you could with our QB situation. Given some of the stuff that's been run and recruiting, I suspect Brown will use them a decent amount.

Other posters have covered UGA pretty well, I'll only add that I expect Jay Rome to have a big year this year. Injuries plagued him last year (of course) and Lynch was still officially the starter.

TE is probably the thinnest position on the team this year, so he'll be counted on. He started to come on strong toward the end of 2012 while sharing time with Lynch (TD catch against both Tech and Bama in SECCG). Practically speaking, we're going to run a lot of 3 WR sets this year with him at TE. Should open up the middle of the field some.

Why did they move Hicks to TE?

Really interested to see Hicks at TE/H Back.

Cheshire, we're pretty thin there after having to boot Flourney-Smith. Plus, Hicks was losing snaps after the first 4 games last year. Merritt Hall (who started some at FB in 2012) was simply a better blocker. Hicks wiffed quite often. Plus, we started using the 3 WR sets more often last year with no FB once Gurley and Marshall went down. We still have Hall at FB and Hicks is really good with the ball in his hands, so I figure it served a few purposes: provides depth at TE, gets Hicks more snaps, and gives him am opportunity to get the ball in his hands more.

I think a big reason teams don't utilize tight ends like they used to has to do with the defenses now. Ten years ago if you had a quick, versatile tight end then you could mismatch him against linebackers. Linebackers have gotten so much faster and better in coverage now that the mismatch is tough to get with a tight end.

I expect to see Auburn use tight ends a bit more different than usual this year with Prosch leaving and there being a void at fullback. I think that Fulse and Uzamah will be moved around the line to create some blocking lanes and used more as a pass option.

Ty Flournoy-Smith, ex UGA tight end has transferred in to go along with OJ Howard and Brian Vogler.
Flournoy-Smith has talent and should be a big help.
Howard could be used as a conventional tight end or split out like a WR,he has very good speed for a big man and Vogler has a lot of experience. I think Kiffin has weapons here and will use them.

I think there is another side to this arguement. Ten years ago you didn't really see flex TE's. Now you have guys that are athletic enough to slide out and play the X spot one play, line up as an H-Back the next and then put his hand in the dirt on the following play. You can be way more creative with some of these guys now than you used to be.

We'll actually use three TE sets a decent bit this year. They were repping a personnel grouping regularly this spring that featured 6'6, 251 Hunter Henry on the line, 6'5, 246 AJ Derby as a motion man between the tackles and then 6'6, 237 Jeremy Sprinkle as the X. All three of those guys can go vertical but all three can also turn around and give you three TE's on the field with run blocking. It's definitely not the easiest thing to defend.

Ask Mississippi State about CJ Uzomah or Alabama about Phil Lutzenkirchen.
