quote:It also doesn't help that they are a small school by enrollment, and because they are so specialized (they only added a few business based degrees in the last 10 years or so, before that all they gave were engineering degrees) a large number of their graduates move away from the area either because they find employment elsewhere or because they were foreign to begin with, came to GT to get an education and returned home.
They are outnumbered in fanhood in their own state by quite a bit. UGA, bama, and auburn without a doubt have more fans in here than tech does. Wouldn't surprise me if UF does as well.

21,000+ is not really a small school by enrollment. That's larger than Ole Miss, Miss State, and Vandy.

really a large portion of their students dont care about football or sports. They have an ageing fanbase, that is slowly passing away

Thats the epitome of Tech football. For me it seems their fans are all old and decrepit.

And people believed that metric that out a value on the size if certain fanbases. The same one that said GT had more fans than LSU, Georgia, or Tennessee.

Oh, and tech sucking right now has nothing to do with leaving the SEC and everything to do with that joke of a coach they have. They didn't have problems selling out (like that'd be hard to do with 55K seats...) when O'Leary was there and they were perenially in the top 15.
a Dawg fan I can agree with

Am I allowed back to your RV in 2015? I had a great time that day up until the end of it.

Used to be pretty respectable, but its shrinking.

Almost every student that goes to an SEC school does so, in part, because of the big time athletics (particularly football). It's part of the "full college experience." Even the students that are blasé out college sports often become fans once they set foot on campus.
Compare this to Ga Tech. Of their undergraduate student body of 16k or so, venture to guess how many of the students came to Ga Tech because of a love of Ga Tech football or some other sport? I would currently put that percentage around 33% and falling. Thus, that really reduces the numbers for their student body, and eventually, alumni support.

This example doesn't exactly work IMO, because even if tech had a football program on the same level as UGA...their students would still be what they are now. Probably half are foreign and don't give a rats arse abotu sports in general, 99% are complete dorks that would rather play video games anyway. I don't think the quality of tech athletics influences potential students at all.

Absolutely. GT is an international school and attracts students that have no interest or knowledge sometimes of football.
It is a strange bird. Its like MIT have a football team...why?

At first I opened this thread and wondered why the OP had posted a picture of a Kentucky game.
Honest mistake.
Honest mistake.

Vandy had 8400 at the spring game, not quite as large a crowd as last year (it was at 10 AM this year) but respectable. That was more than UNC, Stanford & Wisconsin. Ga Tech has to get rid if the triple option, they have won 6-8 games consistently but it's killing fan interest in this era of football. Not that it's not a goo offense or Johnson a good coach it's just the truth.
I'm hoping they wait until after 2015 to fire him though, VU has to go to GA Tech in 2016. Would be nice to play them early I the year transitioning to a new offense.
