They need to part ways with Johnson. But they are one of the top reasearch universities in the world, so I would guess football is not a top priority.

Cautionary tale of leaving the SEC.

I remember it like it was yesterday.

Even then everyone said it was a huge mistake.

Total drama. Total butthurt. Really bad leadership. Worst leadership of all time although, for awhile, I thought Hamilton at UT might surpass them.

ETA: They'll never admit it but their fans are regretting it still today. Even their young fans, what few remain.

GT is fairly unique, though, in that they have a respectable football history. John Heisman coached there. They have had a decent attendance and following over the years, too, for such a specialized school.

Sure there isn't a lot of people sitting in the rain but if you look under the upper deck you see a bunch of people sitting there.

So it's GT, shrinking fan base but still a smart bunch.

Found out a guy I play soccer with went to school at Georgia Tech. Asked him what he thought of the football team, and he said " I don't really follow them, I watch Florida football."

They were selling season tickets for $99 recently if that give ya any idea. They just don't really care.

Georgia fans are charitable enough to buy those every other year for the cause. Only thing we ask is they keep our ATL stadium tidy.

They an OK job of it.

They obviously like to inflate the numbers like UAB. If a pregnant woman walks through the gate, they count it as two.

This. I thought about going but it was pouring rain and the wind was awful. They were allowing umbrellas in but that wouldn't have helped at all.

You mean like Yale, Harvard unique? Except Yale and Harvard have more MNCs.

I get what you are saying, but withthe advent of the BCS and the playoffs, Ga Tech has zero chance of ever returning to their glory days.

Their standard for future big years are now lowered to victories over UGA, the taterheads or FSU once or twice a decade, if that.

I was there and the weather felt like it was mid-February. Attendance looked to be 1500-2000 (you can see most of the people in the Lower East stands under the overhang, there were more in the Lower West stands which the photo doesn't show).

Most tech fans I knew in elementary and middle school are deciding to abandon the sinking ship now as we go off to college. If they got into UGA and don't mind it they become a dawg. If they have too much of a hatred of UGA they usually end up picking Auburn, USCe, or Tennessee to remain in a position where they can continue hating, but with the chance of a win more than once every 8 years.

So yes, the fan base is shrinking as more and more tech legacies can no longer gain admission into the school, and as the general student population is slowly growing cold to football.

To be fair, it was cold and raining really hard. I realize all (excluding Vandy) SEC teams have many diehards that would gladly sit in that downpour to watch a SPRING scrimmage but most people wouldn't.

Tech's football fan base is shrinking as many legacies' kids can't get in the school and their student body more and more resembles MIT or CIT rather than a typical state university.

Tech competed against Ole Miss in the Music City Bowl but otherwise would get killed playing an SEC schedule.

But to answer the OP, it's very small. Their largest contingent in the state is probably within a 20 mile bubble of campus. Once you leave the perimeter, you'll have a few small smatterings around metro atlanta of tech people. But after that they are few and far between. They are outnumbered in fanhood in their own state by quite a bit. UGA, bama, and auburn without a doubt have more fans in here than tech does. Wouldn't surprise me if UF does as well.

Oh, and tech sucking right now has nothing to do with leaving the SEC and everything to do with that joke of a coach they have. They didn't have problems selling out (like that'd be hard to do with 55K seats...) when O'Leary was there and they were perenially in the top 15.
