do you agree that the confederate flag is incredibly offensive to some people? Just answer this for me. No tangents.

I'm sure it is to people who have been told to think that it is a symbol of slavery. There was much more to it than that. Should we change the US flag because it was the banner under which thousands of Indians were slaughtered? Is it not also offensive to some?

The Civil War to me was when my ancestors stood up and fought for what they believed was their right to self governance and to preserve their way of life. Slavery was an ugly part of it...but it was an ugly part of the overall founding of the US as well.

If you're from GA....with any roots in GA...this is your heritage whether you like it or not. I'm not proud of the slavery part...but frankly my relatives were poor so slaves weren't an issue....but I am proud that they stood up and fought for what they believed to be an oppressive and overreaching federal government.

no caps or exclamation points? and you didn't call me an a-hole, little bitch, or dumbass.

Good rebuttal, but obviously I still don't want the conferedate battle flag representing the entire state.

There's no way. And if so, it's time for the Tom Asses to leave

I was born and raised in GA. My parents were not (yes they are yankees). I have studied the civil war extensively. I've been to Gettysburg, Antietam, and of course Kennesaw Mountain. I also love to study other American history and European history. But most of all, I love long walks on the beach.

Well...that explains it. You don't have the same ancestral connection to the south that many of us have....and your parents would have none at all. In fact, human nature would be to make fun of the locals when you're a transplant.....so you've probably been hearing about how southerners are stupid for obsessing on the civil war, we can't drive, are rednecks, racists, uncivilized, etc. for your whole life.

Nothing personal....we just come from different places.

Nobody obsesses over the civil war in atlanta. And come to think of it, I very rarely see a confederate flag in my daily travels in and around the atlanta metro.

Any symbol that is rooted in a culture that enslaved a particular group of people should not be celebrated (or used to represent the entire state population). That is my personal opinion. The history of my family is irrelevant.

Ditto (on the nothing personal part).

What if your GA ancestors fought for the other side?

As has been noted before...nobody in Atlanta is actually from GA....and they sure aren't muti-generational southerners. So they don't have the connection I mentioned above.

You should be shot...and all references to you and your family should be stricken from all records as if you never existed.

Well, if you are from near where you list your current location, there is a good chance you should be shot.

Such an evil symbol should be changed to something more holistic and enveloping, something perhaps to actually glorify the hard working people that actually built this country.... without any of the benefits of freedom or wealth or privilege ... something that represents the working man...

Something for the farmers and the tradesmen that built this country... too many of whom did so under the ugly reprehensible shroud of slavery...

do you agree that symbols can evolve to mean different things? The American flag is a living, breathing, ever changing symbol of humanity's experiment with democracy. The confederate flag lived for only 4 years. It never got the opportunity to grow up.

Is the Constitution a living breathing ever changing document to?

Why does the US Flag get to breathe and change but the confederate flag doesn't?

Did you make that rule or can you link me to the rules committee that made that determination?

Cant the constitution be amended? Slavery, after all, was outlawed by the 13th amendment.

The confederate flag has been dead for over 150 years. If the south had won, perhaps it would mean something completely different (to me) today.

perhaps, but it's almost midnight and I really have no more desire to continue this debate. I respect your opinion, you've made valid points, but clearly we don't agree on certain things.

Because im a fricking bulldog. and a little diversity is good for you. There's nothing wrong with healthy debate.

More food for thought...

99.9% of southern white people in 1860 were not slave owners.

Yankees and other historical revisionists like to pretend everyone in the South had pet Africans like they were labrador retrievers. It's simply not the case.

My people weren't from that area during that period.

Hillbillies just don't want anyone telling them what to do....and they fight anyone who does. Conscription for any cause doesn't sit well with mountain folk....
