With only 1 SEC win in 1952 his seat may have gotten hot enough that unless he had another 1950 type season he was gone. If the Bear had beaten the Vols even once he may never have coached at Texas A&M.
Bryant left Kentucky simply because football played second fiddle to basketball. It had nothing to do with the team's performance on the field.
Kentucky finished ranked in the Top 25 in each of Bryant's last 5 seasons in Lexington.
Furthermore, they LOVED him at Kentucky. This is what Bryant had to say about his decision to leave for Texas A&M after the fact:
quote:
Well, we won at Kentucky, and I don't think I'd have ever left if I hadn't gotten pigheaded. It was probably the most stupid thing I ever did. I could have had just about anything I wanted, and Mary Harmon loved it. We had a social position coaches seldom have - good friends with Governor Wetherby and all - and we lived right there near the Idle Hour Country Club. Mr. Guy Huguelet got us an honorary membership, and that's a club that some people wait years to get into.

Integration plus population shift-- There's a reason the 3 big Florida programs exploded in the early 80s and have basically been title contenders since then while the Rust Belt and the little schools like Ole Miss have become secondary powers.

political correctness.

Population shift was only part of it. For instance, Alabama's population in 1960 was around 3 million, whereas Florida's was estimated to be around 5 million. Alabama would win 3 national championships during the 1960s while no school from Florida even came close.

this play

Eli's Heisman moment. And right down on his arse he goes. Chad Lavalais explodes off the line, shoves center Doug Buckles back until he steps on his quarterback's foot. Ball game.

If anything ever perfectly described Ole Miss sports. It would be that video.

Wait do Ole Miss fans really consider LSU a rival? That's like Vol fans who think of us as rivals, it's adorable.

quote:actually it was Billy Kinard. Not sure what you mean by division title. They didn't come into existence until Arkansas and South Carolina joined the conference. He did do well even though most of his wins didn't count due to probation.
That was when Vaught named his successor in Bob Tyler....Ole Miss chose to go with their buddy, Bruiser Kinard. Tyler ended up a few years later at MSU where he won a division title.
