It's kinda hard to judge, but I think AJ McCarron was good enough to start in 2010. He had good stats, but they were mostly in garbage time.
That last series against Auburn, when he had to replace McElroy, he failed to complete a single pass. But in his defense, Bama's receivers were dropping balls all through that second half. I actually think McCarron was putting the ball in nice spots, for what it's worth.
Edit: Meh, I just took another look at the last seconds of that Iron Bowl. His passes were a little bit more sloppy than I remembered.
I'm curious. What do Bama fans think? How many games would you have won in 2010 if you had started McCarron.
The closest win of the year was Arkansas, but McElroy didn't really contribute much to that. That was won primarily because of the run game.

Wouldn't it be Herb Tyler for LSU? I don't think it would be anymore recent. Lee was a rs and didn't start game 1 IIRC.
Nope. Jordan Jefferson in 2008

I don't think either of you understands what game 1 means.

Does Shane Matthews fit the criteria? I just looked at his first year stats. If he was a true freshman, that was astounding.

It could very well happen for LSU this year.

Aj was a rs that year, 09 was true freshman year. In which case we probably never beat UF in Atlanta.

Oh, yeah. I know he was a rs in 2010. My only question is how would it have changed your season in 2010?
I thought he had a bit more instinct without a big drop off in intellect compared to McElroy. He never seemed afraid to go for the deep pass. He was throwing it farther in 2010 than McElroy was a s a senior.

AU-Stan White 1990
I don't think AU has ever had a true Frosh QB start a season opener.
