There's more to it than people deliberately embracing the "auto-centric" lifestyle. If you want to work and make money, you work at X. But you can't afford to live next door to X. So you have to live at Y. Sure, if you are single, you can live anywhere you want. But once the wife and kids pop out, you don't have as many options on where to live. A cool hip trendy cabbage town place doesn't work. And even it if did, it's more expensive than a McMansion 35 minutes outside of town, and less night-walkers to worry about.

the American ego (along with the automobile) led to the evolution of the McMansion. Bigger = better is still a widely accepted philosophy.

But really the problem with Atlanta is not the McMansion. It's the sprawl. Of all the metro areas in the world with more than 5 million people, the Atlanta metro is the least dense. In other words, we're really fricking spread out.

Shared green space, parks, sidewalks that lead to places, etc. aren't exclusive to "in town." Suburbia can utilize these features on a smaller scale. Europe does. Some places here do as well. This is why public transit works in these places.

So what is your point?

Make a definitive statement.

Future city and community leaders and contractors should understand the value of density. Atlanta is not done growing. Grow smart. Grow smart. That is all.

Brain Train had some traction before the economy tanked. Also had some $ in the regional splost that didn't pass.

There were some definite challenges but a very doable project. The biggest issue was general public has to see that it would make their commute better (which it wouldn't).

The lack of the northern arc, economy tank timing, and GDOT debt has the State in a pickle for many years to come.

I live and work in Cobb. Expensive equipment was stolen out of a truck in the parking lot of my business in a very nice neighborhood, filled with cheaply constructed but "stylish" half million dollar homes. These homes will be falling apart in less than 20 years. I don't mind ostentatious consumers. However, going for size over actual good internal construction is just completely foolish to me.

how far a walk is it from the GA State station to the tailgate lots

Ten minutes. That's what I do when I want to get to the Ted early and the Braves shuttle isn't running yet.

You just take Capital Ave and you're there in no time.

I live like 5 miles from Turner and went to the game saturday. I got online to look at taking marta bc I figure it'd be a breeze. I'd have to drive to the nearest marta station (ok, no biggie), get dropped off like a mile from the stadium, then take a marta bus to get dropped off at the lot. That's a lot of frickin hassle, not to mention no way I'm waiting for a frickin bus at 11pm in that area. I just ended up driving. Well, driving there anyway.

Meh. It's really not that bad. MARTA PD and APD are out in full force after a game. Thousands ride the shuttle back to Five Points.

I live in Atlantic Station so it's more convenient for me to take MARTA. Guess that's not the case for a lot of people though.
