LSU Lady Track holds 11 Indoor & 14 Outdoor National Championships.

There's probably a better women someone could nominate but she was the first women that came to mind due to her numerous media interviews, etc

Albert Belle should be our Baseball representative, not Ben McDonald.

College:

1st team All-SEC (1986, 1987)
South 1 Regional Tournament MVP (1986)
2nd team All-America (1986)
3rd team All-America (1987)

Major League Baseball (Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles):

AL home run leader (1995)
AL RBI leader (1993, 1995-tied with Mo Vaughn, 1996)
AL doubles leader (1995-tied with Edgar Martínez)
AL runs leader (1995-tied with Edgar Martínez)
AL slugging percentage leader (1995, 1998)
AL outfield assist leader (RF) (1999-tie)
Named to Silver Slugger team (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998)
All-Star (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997)
First player to ever hit 50 HR and 50 Doubles (1995)
The Sporting News Player of the Year (1995)
Baseball Digest Player of the Year (1995)
Led major leagues in the 1990s with 1,099 RBI
Led major leagues in extra base hits in the 1990s with 711
4th player ever to have 8 straight seasons with 30 HR and 100 RBI
Inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame (June 2005)
AL leader in runs created (1998)
AL leader in OPS+ (1998)
AL leader in total bases (1995, 1996, 1998)

Also, LOL at the guy saying Auburn is hands down #1 when it comes to mens sports. Sure they have a case, but LSU is right up there.

I get that Bo > Billy, but Shaq > Barkley. The others are debateable.

Maravich should be our honorable mention as well.

Here's an add for the LSU women:

Seimone Augustus: 2 x Olympic gold (2008, 2012); Bronze in World Championship (2006); 1 overall WNBA pick (2006); 2 x WNBA Champion (2011, 2013); WNBA Finals MVP (2011); WNBA Rookie of the Year (2006); WNBA All-Rookie 1st team; 4 x WNBA all-star; 2 x SEC Player of Year (2005,2006); 2 x Naismith Award (2005, 2006); 2 x Wooden Award (2005, 2006); 2 x Wade Trophy (2005, 2006); EuroCup Champion; EuroCup MVP

She was pretty epic on the court...

This is a well thought-out, researched thread.

I expect you'll get no recognition here, but good work.

I'm surprised it took two pages to bring up Pete Maravich. He is after all one of the greatest college basketball players ever - and the greatest scorer in college basketball history (before there was a 3 point line)

quote:

LSU: Pete Maravich

quote:

Collegiate records[edit]
Points, career: 3,667 (three seasons)
Highest scoring average, points per game, career: 44.2 (3,667 points/83 games)
Points, season: 1,381 (1970)
Highest scoring average, points per game, season: 44.5 (1,381/31) (1970)
Games scoring 50 or more points, career: 28
Games scoring 50 or more points, season: 10 (1970)
Field goals made, career: 1,387
Field goals made, season: 522 (1970)
Field goal attempts, career: 3,166
Field goal attempts, season: 1,168 (1970)
Free throws made, game: 30 (in 31 attempts), vs. Oregon State, December 22, 1969

Other men worth mentioning:

Bert Jones
Y.A. Tittle
Jim Taylor
Kevin Mawae (maybe the best center in NFL history)
Kevin Faulk (SEC record holder for total yards)
Tommy Casanova
Tyrann Matthieu
Patrick Peterson
Albert Belle

LSU's Lady Tigers have won a record 25 NCAA Track and Field National Championships if wikipedia is to be believed (with Texas a distant second at 10 championships) so I'm sure there should be another couple mentions from them to fill out the women's side of the roster.

It was tough between Shaq and Pete. LSU has put out some great athletes over the years.

#1 overall draft picks for the NFL, NBA, MLB, & WNBA. Can any other school say that?

LSU. Fico was the #1 overall draft pick in the pro softball league. Yes, there is one.
Also, for an honorable mention on the men's side. Can we use Trindon Holiday, fastest man in college at the time, and in a second sport BCS title winning rb/we.

if we're going to use a LSU track and field star from the men's side it should probably be Glen Hardin:

LINK

quote:

The Glenn “Slats” Hardin Award is named in honor of the greatest track and field athlete to ever compete for the LSU program. Hardin was a four-time NCAA champion and six-time All-American during his brilliant career at LSU from 1933-35. Hardin was a member of LSU’s first national championship team in 1933, where he captured individual titles in the 440-yard dash and 220-yard low hurdles.

Hardin is a true American track and field legend as he was the world’s premier 400-meter hurdler in the first half of the 20th century. He set the world record in the event three times during his career with his best time of 50.6 seconds standing as the world record for 19 years from 1934-53.

After winning a silver medal in the 400 hurdles at the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Calif., Hardin won the gold medal at the infamous 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany. He remains the only LSU Track & Field athlete to win an Olympic gold medal in an individual event.

I figured someone else would know of a better male track athlete than Trindon, but he's not a bad option.

Reason #1 why the SECRant is so bad right now.

Someone makes a quality thread with research behind their opinion(s), and then someone else has to shite in it with a post like the one I quoted.

2nded I guess only thoughtless flame threads are SECr worthy. Just think if everyone on this board used the time it took them to post 3 pointless flame threads to make 1 thread that actually had some substance

Jimmy Taylor >>>> Billy Cannon by a mile.

NCAA

AP / UPI First Team All-SEC (1957)
FWAA First Team All-American (1957)
Senior Bowl MVP (1958)
NFL

5× Pro Bowl selection (1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964)
AP First-Team All-Pro (1962)
2× AP Second-Team All-Pro (1960, 1963)
4× NFL champion (1961, 1962, 1965, 1966)
Super Bowl champion (I)
1962 NFL MVP (AP, NEA)
NFL 1960s All-Decade Team
New Orleans Saints #31 retired
Packers Hall of Fame inductee
Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee
2nd most rushing TDs in NFL history at time of retirement.

Same goes for Steve Van Buren over Cannon

5× AP First-Team All-Pro (1944, 1945, 1947, 1948, 1949)
2× NFL champion (1948, 1949)
4× NFL Rushing champion (1945, 1947, 1948, 1949)
NFL 1940s All-Decade Team
NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team
Philadelphia Eagles #15 retired
Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee (1965)
Eagles Hall of Fame inductee (1987)
Retired as NFL all-time leader in rushing yards and rushing TDs

Albert Belle over Ben McDonald by a mile too. Bob Pettit would also be most other schools #1 in hoops by a mile if not for Shaq.

Add Vicki Orr to the Auburn Women

quote:

Vickie Orr Wiley, a native of Hartselle, Ala., played professional basketball in Italy from 1990-92 before returning to the Plains to graduate in 1993. While playing basketball at Auburn, Orr was named a Kodak All-American three consecutive times and SEC Player of the Year in 1988. She led the Tigers to two straight NCAA championship games and was MVP of the SEC Tournament and a member of the All-Final Four Team at the 1989 NCAA tournament. Orr also played on the 1990 USA team that won the gold medal in the World Championships and the 1992 U.S. Olympic team that won the bronze medal. She ranks second in scoring for Auburn women's basketball with 2,035 points and is one of only two Auburn women to top 2,000 points and have 1,000 rebounds

But the REAL reason to prepare thy anus...

quote:

]She is married to former Auburn basketball player Aubrey Wiley. Their son, Austin, at 6-foot-8, is already a basketball standout, and he doesn't start high school until the fall

He was a freshman this year...

Bo Jackson is kinda a tough one to compare to people. He was a freak for an athlete and had one of the greatest SEC careers of any football player but his NFL career was cut so short.
