He was trying to hurt Backes.
Did he step on the ice that shift with the intention to injure someone, no. But the opportunity presented itself and he took advantage of it.
He targeted the head. That's a certainty. There is no intention besides harm when you target the head.
This. Also, I havent seen anyone yet say how far away from the puck Backes was. In the official NHL Player's Safety video, Quintal pointed out that Seabrook was still in the faceoff circle when Backes initially passed up the puck. He had plenty of time to avoid it or lessen up. He charged into Backes and tried to level his head. Period. I dont think people who havent played hockey understand how bad of a hit this is, and are under-reacting to this just because its the playoffs.
ETA: You guys are ignorant saying he turned on the hit. You saw how he passed up the puck. If anything he turned into the hit. Two different things, had Backes have turned his back, it couldve been really really bad... Because Seabrook had decided he was going to gun for him as soon as he saw the opportunity, and there was no stopping his built up momentum if Backes turned his back to him at the last second. Trust me, I played the game for 13 years. If that happened, it probably result in Backes season over and Seabrook with a 7 game suspension. Backes turned that way because he was going to go back to the action. He probably didnt expect to get hit a good 4 full seconds after he passed up the puck, especially like that. Idiots.

That doesn't bother me. Chicago fans were getting some rough loving from what I saw during game 1 and while I felt bad for them then, now I understand.

Everyone that thinks there is going to be retribution for the Backes hit needs to consider that the Blues need to stay even keeled and not take penalties.
If the game gets out of hand it's possible, but I wouldn't be looking for it with so much on the line.

I'm telling you, maybe not these playoffs, but next year, I would not be targeting Seabrook all game. I would be targeting his head all game long. Every single time he steps on the ice, someone needs to leave their feet and drive an elbow through his head. Period.
Either that or bring Twist out of retirement for one game.

Yeah. It's not going to happen tonight. In a blow out or next year.
Hopefully, they do clamp down on Duncan Keith's stick shite.

I loved Don Cherry's take on Keith.
Guy has fought one time in five years and he's slashing the shite out a guy like Tarasenko.
Gutless coward.

Keith is a gutless coward, and toews need his too acting like a tough man when someone can't stsnd up.

I just watched it, you're right. Cherry is spot on with his comments there, I hadn't seen any of the slashing shite live, but it's garbage.
Hopefully they get their shite together tonight. Say what you want about the situation, but the Hawks don't play this way often. St. Louis has got them out of their game and it's showing by trailing 0-2 and now with Seabrook out.

Ryan Miller hasn't come close to playing his best 60 minutes yet.
I'd love to see it tonight and knock these pukes down to life support.

Yeah, Hawks have the superior skill, I'm a little surprised they've gone the route they've gone.
United Center is the toughest place to play in the league, should be a tough one for the Blues as I expect the Hawks to be on better behavior.

Crawford has my vote for best mask in the league.

A shame Miller let in that weak one.
Mission for these first 10 minutes was to weather the storm.

Yeah, that was a tough one.
Missing open nets isn't helping either, but it's early.
