Scoring in JUCO doesn't mean much. Outside of a handful of guys, the competition is much worse than he'll see next year.
247 has him as the number 23 point guard entering college next year. I think he's a little better than that, but that's much closer to that than he is a guy like Chiozza or Ulis.

A guy who leads JUCO in scoring by 8 ppg MORE than the 2nd guy is significant.

JUCO stats are fools' gold.
Didn't Odo lead JUCO in rebounds by a pretty wide margin? Was he seriously the best rebounder in JUCO?

quote:Ha. Sure he does.
We wont have to lean on Gray nearly as much, but Gray has the scoring ability Thornton has (just in a different way).
quote:I seriously don't give a shite about JUCO stats. They mean nothing.
You dont throw down 40+ 1/3 of a season and at times 50 and 60 and not be a pretty damn good player. Keep in mind not a single person was even close to Gray's numbers last season in JUCO.
I think Gray will be a good player for LSU, but Marcus Thornton was one of the best pure scorers in college ball and has had a pretty successful NBA career. Comparing Gray to Thornton is exactly my point: you're over-hyping him.

Your opinion doesnt matter, the fact is he led all of JUCO in scoring by a v ery large 8 points per game margin, that's a ridiculous number on any level of basketball.
It's not like someone else did what he did, he's the ONLY one that did it and no one else was close.

And Gray is very good pure scorer as well. How many times do I need to repeat he threw down 40+, 50+ and even 60+ points last season. Regardless of what your opinion of JUCO ball is, it's crystal clear he improved a ton from his freshman to sophomore season like MANY college ball players do.
I'm not overhyping him at all. Did I say he WILL be Marcus Thornton? No, pay attention. I said he has Thornton's scoring ability just in a different way than the 3 point shot Thornton had. Both were/are streaky scorers who have the ability to take over a game. Thornton tore up JUCO ball very similar to what Gray did. Believe it or not, some of those games actually translate.

Odo is a very good rebounder, the problem he has is he's offensively inept. If he was able to play 30 minutes a game he would have ridiculous rebounding numbers in D1 ball as well. That's the big strenth to his game, problem is, he's so bad offensively he's just a turnover machine on that end and doesnt grasp offensive flow/shot selection at all.
IF you want to get into more JUCO guys we can talk about Thornton and Coleman if you wish with both of their games translated pretty damn well from JUCO to D1 ball.

They mean something. Those stats show Gray can score as a volume shooter. Most reasonable LSU fans don't expect Gray to score 20 a game. I do think it's reasonable to expect 12-15 PPG from him though. We'll need his dribble penetration and defense next season for sure.
I wouldn't disregard the guy's JUCO season just because of his opponents. For the most part, he did what he was supposed to do against them. He'll be a good player.

If Odo was seriously as good of a rebounder as you're saying he is, then I'm pretty sure he would've found a role regardless of how bad his offense may be.
quote:Good God. I'm not debating whether or not there have been players from JUCO who have had success at the high-major level.

quote:Yeah, he's been pretty damn good in JUCO. Too bad JUCO stats don't mean shite. Some guys who dominate in JUCO just don't have games that translate well into high-major college basketball.

Cameron Forte averaged 22.5 points last season in JUCO, shooting 63%, and couldn't make an impact for UGA this season.
Maybe Gray has improved his game since last season, but I don't think JUCO stats, regardless of how dominant, are proof that he has. Again, I'm more inclined to judge him off of his TTU stats than his JUCO stats.
I expect he'll be an inefficient volume scorer for LSU. A good player, but not Marcus Thornton. Feel free to bump this thread next year if I'm wrong. I don't really care.
quote:Semantics. You're saying he has the scoring ability that Thornton has. We'll see about that.

UGA picks up Yante Maten of Bloomfield Hills, MI (not far from my neck of the woods). Offers from MSU and IU.
Solid pickup for the Dawgs.

It's not like Martin has ever shied away from taking guys with baggage.

Not a lot of guys left out there that can score with their back to the basket. I still think he ends up at Auburn. Person has experience dealing with Meta World Peace so Bowers should be a walk in the park compared to him.
