The following assumes the listed weights on rolltide.com's roster are still from last year:

M. Smith was 180, now he's 195.

Liner was 281, now he is 295.

Tomlinson was 287, now he is 299.

Eddie Jackson was 175, now he is 188.

Geno was 186, now he is 197.

Tenpenny was 207, now he is 218.

Reuben was 244, now he is 236.

Some of those just don't seem right.

Hopefully that means the talent will actually be used instead of forcing balance. If the pass is lighting them up, air it out. If the run is killing them, grind it out. We tried too hard to be balanced.

Worth noting that Brandon Greene is listed as an OL.

Ryan Kelly is up to 296.

Trey DePriest is at 250. Interesting since it seems we're trying to get smaller up front, but CNS said DePriest will have an expanded role. Is there perhaps an injury reason for the weight gain? Is it a preparation problem? Or is it not a problem at all?

The DBs are getting bigger, maybe this means they'll be in the face of WRs more often.

Yeldon at 221. Henry at 241. Did they bulk up for the sake of having a powerful running game?

Cooper Bateman (who in the videos is the third QB behind Sims and Morris) at 6'3" 215 is good for being a RS Freshman. Good muscle gain.

What we saw

•At least one position switch "experiment" as Nick Saban likes to call them is underway. ArDarius Stewart, who redshirted his first season as a wide receiver, was working with the safeties during today's open periods. Stewart did pretty much everything at Fultondale High and played defensive back at the 2013 Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Football Game.
•Brandon Greene, who spent all of last season at tight end, is back with the offensive line.
•Check out our story on Alabama's roster updates. At least three players are not listed on it and there are a bunch of number changes.
•WR DeAndrew White wore a black, non-contact jersey. On Jan. 30, White tweeted that he was "fresh outta surgery."
•When Alabama's inside linebackers went through their first drill, Trey DePriest worked alongside Reuben Foster. It's at this point in time where we stress it's VERY early, and a lot can change.
•On the quarterback front, Blake Sims and Cooper Bateman worked on one side, Parker McLeod and Alec Morris worked on the other. Freshman David Cornwell opened with group and then went off to throw with the tight ends. Lane Kiffin was doing a lot of instructing during the periods we watched.
•Junior Dillon Lee, who often bounced back and forth between outside and inside linebacker last season, started camp with the outside linebackers.
•D.J. Pettway, who is listed as a linebacker on Alabama's updated roster, worked with the defensive line during the open periods.
•Among those watching from the sidelines: Jeoffrey Pagan, Bill Battle and a bunch of recruits.
•Ed Conyers, who has been officiating Alabama practices for more than 50 years, was back for another spring.

-- Saban likes how the players responded in the offseason work. Attitude was good all around.

-- The first practice is always a work in progress with new guys. But every player needs to know they're committed to making it work as a group.

-- There aren't many issues beyond fundamentals in the first practice.

-- Tempo was good Saturday.

-- Harrison Jones and Chad Lindsday decided not to come back and play after graduating.

-- Jai Miller is focusing on academics and not with the team "right now," Saban said.

-- ArDarius Stewart is "experimenting" at safety.

-- In terms of becoming a pro-style QB, Blake Sims is still a "work in progress." A lot of people will get an opportunity this spring, Saban said about the QB race.

-- Saban is looking for consistency at QB. That's the most important factor in deciding this.

-- It will be a work in progress all spring. "It will be a long time in developing these players." They won't make a snap decision on the competition.

After the departure of All-American middle linebacker C.J. Mosley, who will likely be a first-round selection in April’s NFL Draft, Depriest is the unquestioned leader in the middle of a defense that will see some changes in the 2014 season.

“I’m just blessed to have a lot of experience,” the rising senior from Springfield, Ohio said after Monday’s practice. “I’ve played for awhile. So I’m just trying to help out where I can.”

One of Mosley’s biggest assets was his leadership ability on and off the field. He made the on-field calls and made sure the defense was in the right position based off of how the offense lined up.

And Alabama coach Nick Saban said Depriest should fill that role nicely.

“Trey has a lot of experience,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said. “He’s a very good player. We need his leadership on defense. He’s obviously going to become the signal-caller, which I think everyone looks up to. He certainly has the knowledge and experience and maturity to effect other players in a positive way. I think that’s something that’s going to be important for our defensive team that he not only contribute with his physical performance and doing his job well, but how he effects everyone else.”

It won’t exactly be brand new stuff for Depriest. He said that he handled some of those duties even when Mosley was on the field.

“I’ve been around long enough to where I can handle it,” Depriest said. “Playing with C.J. last year, we took the role and kind of split it. He did the majority of it. But sometimes I’ve gotta help him out when teams went fastball and stuff. So when he can’t get it off and communicate it, I had to help there too.”

quote:

“Harrison Jones and Chad Lindsay were not out there today,” Saban said. “Both those guys are guys that were fifth-year guys who have graduated who have decided not to come back and play. We certainly appreciate the great job that they did when they were involved in the program and wish them well. They'll always be a part of what we've done here, and we certainly appreciate their efforts and contribution that they've had in the success of the program.

“Jai Miller decided to focus on academics and not come back and be a part of the team, at least for right now. Those are the only guys that I think are anybody that you would have a question about.”

quote:

Depriest on the team’s offseason attitude: “Guys are just a lot more hungry. We didn’t finish the season like we wanted to. Guys knew that and they just took a different approach to it, and are trying to get back to the standard to how we do stuff.”

Wide receiver Amari Cooper on his first impression of new offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin: “Pretty cool guy. Pretty laid back guy. He pays attention to everything, every little thing. I noticed that about him when we were practicing for the bowl game.”

Cooper on his reportedly 4.31 40-yard dash time: “Yes, on one clock, yeah. On one clock it was a 4.31. It was my first 40. 4.31, 4.35 and 4.38.”

Also heard a while back the staff timed him at 4.38, so again, he's consistently sub 4.4.

Trey DePriest

I know this might be the first day, but the pics of DePriest I saw just scream "two down" Linebacker. Foster seems to be "leaner", hopefully that translates to him being our every down linebacker. Overall we are so STACKED, it is insane. I think we might be witnessing an overload of talent similar to the late 90's early 200's Miami Hurricane teams

Exactly, If he stays at this weight, I'm sure Ragland and Foster will get a lot of work.

Quick Question fellas. Was Trey injured during winter conditioning?

That is what I'm wondering. He is listed at 250 now, which isn't a huge gain from his listing a year ago. But maybe that is just a bad picture. Either way, he always moved pretty well before, if he's got that whole deal under wraps come kickoff, he'll be fine.

Ragland looks pretty damn good for 257 though.
