CNS doesn't swap which side of the field his base D CBs are on, so if TB or Hump is in there he's going to be going up against #1 WRs some of the time

ETA: they do swap sides but only to keep one at boundary and one at field, not to follow around the top WR

Hump got that 5 star rating mostly because of size and speed

he was a tremendous player in HS also. but playing CB in HS is not the same as playing CB for CNS. He didnt play very well in the MS/AL all star game but he didn't look like he was giving 100%.

I said during his recruitment that he was the best CB to come out in a few years, and I still believe that. I would still believe it if he had went anywhere else too. He needed to bulk up a bit, but I think once he polishes up his game and gets a bit stronger, he'll be a force. Man, zone, won't matter.

TB is similar. Those two will be quite the duo.

This is something I'd like to see change. It worked in 2009 when we had Javier/Kareem/Johnson, and in 2011 when we had Milliner/Dre/Menzie, but we need to match up our best on their best. When TB and Hump develop, it won't matter, but if it's TB out there with Cyrus, I'd like to see TB following the best WR around the field. When we put Belue on Evans last year, he made all of one catch and it came off of a Manziel scramble play, and even then Belue was in position.

I just don't wanna end up in a situation where Cyrus Jones is covering a Laquon Treadwell or a Sammie Coates.

Just my confidence in humphrey's skill set and the probability of jones getting beat on slant routes every play, not having the top speed to cover deep well, and his mental mistakes (iron bowl) marlon should get his opportunity off of Cyrus' mistakes and lesser physical upside unfortunately
there is nothing wrong with cyrus jones speed or athletic ability, hes a sub 4.5 guy with a 38" vert. His problem last year was mental errors, which all cbs are going to make in their first year, just as hump and brown will make in their first year, because they dont know where they are supposed to be all the time and are having tob think about everything they are doing

yep, every year there is a talented young player who earns playing time and then struggles a little bit and some fans want to say "oh, so and so sucks" and then they forget that those guys were once highly thought off recruits as well.

I cant remember many guys that came in and never struggled. CJ Moseley struggled his first year, Dee Milliner struggled his first year, Mark Barron struggled his first year and the list goes on and on. Ro and Hightower didnt struggle much their first years, but they were the exception.

Fans wanted Warmack's head after the '10 season. Poster after poster talked about the need for someone to take his spot heading into '11

I'd hardly call his Freshman season struggling. He wasn't all world like he was his last two years, but he was solid.

Definitely. Most CBs do. The difference in most of them and Cyrus Jones is that they were at least usually in position, and when they weren't it wasn't because they weren't physical enough to hang with the receiver. Jones was out of position a lot. Sure he can turn it around, but being optimistic about Cyrus and being optimistic about a Dee Milliner or a Deion Belue is entirely different.

I may be reading tea leaves, but it seems to me that CNS sees something in Cyrus. Getting a lot of individual instruction from CNS in practice and working at 1st team CB in last year's A-day despite just switching to that position. I think he's a player who could see a big turn-around this year.

I remember, some people said he was too big. Fast foward a few years, "warmacking" is lauded

It's not out of the question, and it wouldn't surprise me if Cyrus turned it around. I just don't expect it.

If Saban didn't have size requirements Jones would be a good fit for free safety IMO.

Oh I understand. I would've liked to have seen improvement over the course of last year, but the WR (and QB)talent in the SEC last year was just sick

Speaking of FS, I've always wondered why Geno never seemed to even get a sniff at field or boundary corner. Heading into spring last year, most fans assumed he and Belue would be the top 2 CBs but it never played out that way

Yea glad we had CJ last year. I think we should be thankful. Kid was recruited to play offense. That fact that he is at CB is a blessing.

didn't geno get into trouble before last season?

Probably doesn't have quite the skill set Saban likes in his field/boundary corners. Also, I'm not too sure that he's got impressive long speed. And while he has bulked up with the move to Safety, I don't know if he's physical enough to counteract the potential for not having great long speed at corner.

I remember this about Steen, not Warmack.

He got in trouble shortly before the season opener. At that time he was 1st string at Star like he had been late in '12. Just never made the move to outside corner for some reason

Steen's action in '10 was limited to filling in for Barrett in the IB. He didn't become a starter or regular contributor til '11 when he and McCullough platooned at RG
