sort of like getting bowl bids now.

no..... not really

Proportionately its harder to make the Dance nowadays than make a bowl. I think the stat now is just over half of all D1 football teams go to a bowl game, whereas in hoops its 68 out of 351. And with all the damage mid-majors have been doing in college hoops over the past several years you can't really say that only the bigger conferences should matter in that analysis either.

Didn't realize it has been that long since either made it in.

Racist politicians kept us out of a couple of tournaments in the early 60's. We finally went in 1963 against the governor's orders.

As someone new to SEC basketball history, I was shocked that Bama had 20 appearances.

Wait nevermind.

And we should have at least nine by the way. We won the ACC title won year but didn't get in the tourny. You can read up all the details on the rules back then and all that.

eta: 1969-1970, SC was 25-3, 14-0 in the ACC. But lost the ACC tournament title game so we didn't make it in. And there was something else that kept us out of the NIT that year too but I can't remember what that was about.

They have a good history. Robert Horry, Latrell Sprewell, Mo Williams, Derek McKey...lotta good players. And coaches - C.M. Newton was the man, Wimp Sanderson was good too, they are solid.

Tennessee also has only been as far as the Elite Eight, so if you're scoring at home, 3 of the 6 SEC teams with the most NCAA tournament appearances have not advanced to the Final Four. 4 of the top 8 if you throw in Vandy. While two of the bottom tier teams in terms of appearances (Miss State and Georgia) have made it to the FF once. This might, MIGHT indicate that one random Final Four here or there is not always the best indicator of program strength...but don't say that to the Rant you will get run outta town.

Interesting...didn't know that. Appears most of their tradition occurred before my time which would explain it.

Thanks- good work you did on your basketball team too. Not sure what they would have done without you.

We have a banner with all of our tournament appearances and a banner for sweet 16, elite 8, final four.

Is that acceptable?
