I would expect Blake Sims to earn at least a redzone
and short yardage package each game.

@Andrew_Gribble: Saban was asked a direct question about Jacob Coker. Declined to answer it because it'd be like talking about a recruit.

Saban and Lance Thompson met with Coker today. Source said the visit was outstanding. Decision should come soon. Coker has been granted his release from FSU.

How legit is Drew DeArmond? He's been tweeting that Coker is set to report to UA in the Summer, like it's a done deal.

He copies and pastes stuff that he reads on TI.

Is anyone else skeptical that Coker can come in and start right away? I know he's talented, but he's as much of an unknown as Cornwell IMO. And Bateman has had a year in the system.

I'm optimistic but I'll admit that the negatives have crossed my mind. He won't be practicing until the summer and Saban's QBs are usually ones that have spent a lot of time in the system.

The one equalizer is Kiffin coming in, so the QB race really could be wide open. But Cornwell and Bateman will both get Spring reps, while Coker won't be practicing with us or FSU. Maybe he could train somewhere?

Very skeptical. It could happen, but if it does, I'm not going to have a warm and fuzzy feeling about the QB situation. I guess if the coaches think he has a chance to start, then he's probably already studying the play book and game film. So, there's that. But, the last two "new" starting QB's for us have had at least two years in the system before they took over the job. I, and I'm sure Saban, don't like the idea of trotting a brand new guy out there.

I wouldn't be surprised to see one of the other guys start, and Coker slowly work his way onto the field as the season progresses, if he's as good as people seem to think.

I am assuming he will be given a training schedule designed by Cochran.

The biggest key for him is when he does get here is working with the WR's on their timing.

I see a lot of people overrating his lack of time spent at Alabama. He has spent just as much time as any of the guys currently on our roster running a pro style offense. The names of the plays are different and the line of scrimmage adjustments will be different, but the scheme isn't really all that different. Plus the only QB we have that has actually taken as many college snaps as Coker is Sims.

We have a new OC coming in so things are going to change anyways. The only real advantage for the guys here will be because of spring practice.

Yeah I don't think time in the system will be as much of a factor as time being conditioned to be a CNS QB. It seems to me that CNS really conditions his starting QB with respect to decision-making and ball security. May be an issue with Coker, may not be.

True, but I think you deal with that more than you do the alternative.

We have to score points in today's SEC. If we can do that on the ground then you tell Coker to take less chances, but if we deal with offensive line struggles again this year we will have to open things up a bit.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see some of the zone read plays start to enter the play calling if Coker is under center.

Agreed. We'll actually have several QB that can do damage with their legs so might as well make zone read and run/pass options a more prominent part of the O

AL.com: What made you decide to transfer and what sold you on going to Alabama?

Jacob Coker: I love Florida State. I love the guys there. Some of my best friends are on that team. It was really tough making a decision to leave just because of the great guys on that team and how close we were. But it comes to a point where I just couldn't sit on the bench anymore. I'm ready to play, and I didn't see that happening. It was time for me to look for a new place. Alabama, to me, felt like home. I grew up a huge Alabama fan and once I went on a visit, it just felt right. Even on the way up there, I told my dad I feel like this is the place to be. I felt real comfortable with it. When I met all the coaches and met the players, I felt even more comfortable with the place. I just got real excited about the possibility of going there.
