Considering that Alabama would still lead the SEC in SEC titles and AP national titles even if the last 30 years were erased from the Alabama history books, I totally agree. We don't even need Gene Stallings or Nick Saban to lead the SEC in virtually every category.
FULL GUMP: [ON] OFF.

Tennessee's two biggest problems are Mark Richt and Steve Spurrier.
Tennessee used to cherry pick recruits from Georgia and South Carolina. And these were big-time recruits, not just role players.
Guys like Jamal Lewis, Cosey Coleman, and Deon Grant from Georgia.
And a great portion of the defensive talent currently turning up in Columbia used to show up in Tennessee. Darwin Walker, Dominique Stevenson, Albert Haynesworth, Shaun Ellis, and so forth.
They don't get these difference makers from either of these states any more. They still sign some players, but not the top flight guys that other schools are truly coveting.
That's the problem with UT. Those players are still coming out of SC and GA, Tennessee just isn't getting any of them.

If this has always been the case how was UT so good for so long? Did it require a lot of out of state players back in its glory days, because I thought they were loaded with Tennessee boys back then but maybe I am wrong.
The in state talent excuse is simply bull shite used to defend incompetence and justify putting up with failure. It sounds like a nice, easy explanation, but it simply has no basis in reality.

Tennessee is right next to Georgia (Atlanta area), North Alabama, the Carolinas, Virginia, and even Ohio is not that far away. They have a lot that they can sell recruits if they would have some kind of strategy and a coaching staff that was worth something.
It is all about coaching. Tennessee is a sleeping giant. When has East Tennessee had great football talent? They should own Memphis as well. It is coaching, coaching, coaching.
I don't expect Tennessee to own Memphis. Otherwise, great post.

traditionally we have gotten most of our talent from the state of georgia. Tennessee as a whole has never produced much talent, except for memphis area. It does seem as though talent is picking up in the state though.

I agree. I don't think they will ever own Memphis. There are too many other SEC schools closer, and East and West Tennessee are worlds apart culturally.

We've had some great players from instate that people forget about.
Chad Clifton
Scott Wells
Al Wilson
John Henderson
Jason Witten
Jabari Greer
Dan Williams
Travis Stephens
Certainly we rely on out of state players but we havent gotten the best players in our state state recently.

If you're not Florida or Georgia itself, one would think it is positioned best geographically in the SEC. It borders 6 SEC states(MO, ARK, MISS, BAMA, GA & KY) and is close to 2 others (SC & LA). Add in the other border/close states like NC, VA, IL and OH and it certainly seems like they don't have to go far to find talent.

The problem is you accept a false premise.
The things you need to be successful:
- Great resources
- Great talent
- Great coaching
- Great development
- Incredible amount of luck
Colt McCoy's
Oklahoma State choking in Aimes
Baylor pulling off a miracle over Kansas State
Any of these things is different, every dominant things Alabama has done to qualify for a dynasty is irrelevant, and they are still waiting for their first natty since they had an Aggie head coach.
You just have to keep trying to get great coaching, great players, great resources, and continually put yourself in a position to get lucky. While Tennessee might have a lack of in state super stars, they have shown the ability to recruit well, so it doesn't matter. It just takes persistence.

Memphis is already bought and paid for...Gumps still have the bill of sale. Somewhere the detailed receipt includes Albert Means.

Tennessee, Like what Nebraska is dealing with, is one school where you have to understand where you are. Tennessee owned Huntsville and north Alabama, North Georgia, southern Ohio and eastern north and south carolina. Those borders were closed off after Fulmer. If they get someone in who knows where they have to make in roads and recruit on a greater scale then they will win. It's important UT has a coach that played or coached at UT previously. Majors and Fulmer had that and you saw the results.

You realize that in the 20 years before Saban arrived at Alabama, the Tide had:
A national title, three conference titles, 5 west division titles (in 15 years of divisional play), 8 10 or more win seasons, and 15 bowl appearances (were eligible but on probation in two other seasons).
Alabama pre-Saban was sub-par only when compared to normal Alabama standards. Almost anyone else would have killed for that level of success.

Vols really aren't too bright.
If we'd kept the receipt, I guarant-damn-tee you that we would have returned Means for a refund.

Tennessee honest question about your incredible collapse...Ha, you really love this stat. You put it in every UT thread even though lsu has only won 1 more in that time span. From 1985 to 2010 UT won 230 games which is 6th in the country. Lsu is 15th with 204. And UT has 801 all time wins, lsu has 747. So, if UT hasn't been great what does that say about lsu

Might wanna look at how well the class is holding up before giggling:
I'd rather use 247 and average stars to truly justify a class. And I was making fun of all the idiotic posts about having the number one class back in June.
Also - if TN talent is getting better...then shouldn't TN be doing better on the field?
But the serious question is - Have you guys been shut out of the other states because of your coaching or the likes of Urban, Spurrier, Richt?

So per 247, we have the what, the 3rd or 4th best class in America?
Butch is recruiting well enough to compete, it's just going to take 2 or 3 consecutive classes before we even belong on the same field as most of the SEC.

Further Bama is the only SEC school that has won at least one SEC title every decade since the SEC was founded with national titles in the 2010s, 2000s, 90s, 70s, 60s and then the rest everyone rolls their eyes at. Every Bama coach since Coach Bryant has had at least one 10+ win season. So yeah, Dubose, Fran, Shula all sucked in a way & they all also had success.
