I actually am really surprised how they handled that. I think dropping him is okay but do it so you don't screw the kid over. If you are going to reevaluate him, tell him in January so he can go to JR days, talk to other coaches, etc. Now he's behind as he hasn't visited any campuses and may not get the same looks he might have. He already didn't have film which is bad enough. Now he hasn't built any relationships, been interviewed, measured, etc.

Also, HS coaches talk. That's how Fran's staff got done in. The triangle is not an area to be trifled with either. For example, in Perroni's 2016 top 50, 5 are from the area. That's 10% of the state's best players at a bunch of small schools that all know each other.

Probably a worse mistake than the Hemphill situation, especially given time was not at all a factor. But hey, feel free to keep pissing off areas like Manvel/Pearland and the Golden Triangle. Actually, why don't you go and pull a Desoto kid's offer (English) while you are at it.

Strong might have an agenda on how he wants to conduct his affairs when it comes to recruiting here in the state of Texas but that kind of move... it IS like he's dismissing the repercussions and just assuming UT is everyone's top choice on where to play their college ball. First impressions go a long way. Not sure if that strategy is worth executing long term in his first season. But their losses are our gains PR wise. I can't remember Sumlin in his first recruiting cycle doing a bunch of that bullshite.

We've definitely done it in the past. Sumlin cut Ty Slalina (TCU) loose. I think Sherman did it to a couple of players as well. But in both cases, the player was notified virtually immediately.

Ethically there's nothing wrong with cutting a guy imo. It's how it is done that matters. You don't wait til late spring after JR Days, spring practices, etc are over. The kid has to start the recruiting process completely over now and he wasn't even taking calls from any other staff. It's not that it was done to Shaw and Campbell, it's that they waited until mid-April to inform them.

How long does it really take to review a kid and make a decision? Just show some goddamn common courtesy to players and their families (and their coaches). It goes a long way.

ESPN analysts names the top "ready to play" defensive player in the entire '15 class to be Daylon Mack (I disagree strongly but whatever) and the top overall offensive player to be Kyler Murray

Things just got real in this Shaw situation

quote:

Johnny is doing an interview with 24/7 right now.

Let me be clear Texas told him to take no visits because he was a UT commit. He did as they asked and passed up three for sure offers from Mizzou, Okstate and Kstate. Only now to be told this morning with no warning that his offer was being pulled.

quote:

I've gotten permission from Johnny's dad to post his txt messages he sent me and emails from the coaches at UT asking Johnny not to attend junior days because it was no need for him to do so.

Someone tell me how to post screenshots an I will post them, to shut up the idiots here blaming WOS coaches for protecting their player.

A little courtesy goes a long way, agreed Tmc. The Shaw thing is getting uglier by the day, lol. The last time a coach really bitchslapped himself over a pulled offer in Texas was Bobby Petrino, who is a notorious SOB in more ways than one as we all know. The Shaw thing with Strong might reach those levels, damn...

Would great if Sumlin could get Jacob and his parents on campus for a visit.

It's the same thing Mack says when he gets offered by a "big-time" program... but it would no doubt be a huge huge coup to grab this kid. Clovis North is in the valley and has always been a good football school.

Haven't the more recent reports on him been somewhat poor?

Not that I recall. He won OL MVP of the Rivals camp in Dallas. It was a few weeks ago, but he definitely is a top talent.

I just read the OU boards and it sounds like he wants to play with his bro who is a class of '16 DB. I doubt we offer (apparently OU wouldn't so I really doubt we would) so may not help our cause.

looking for more Wariboko info and found this rivals article on him. He's obviously an inside guy and maybe not the best shape but he moves so well we still love him.

A little bit like Teuhema really. Both are guards for us, and we don't normally take guards (we take tackles that end up at guard like probably Lanfear), but when a guy is this talented, you take a chance and hope LJ can get him in shape. OU's offense is AR based (which is one reason we often like the same guys) and they were also projecting that.

quote:

"Well, I want to take a few more visits and really survey all of my options and further explore the chance I have to play together with my brother in college," Wariboko explained. "The last thing I wanted to do was undermine the best interests of Bob Stoops and the University of Oklahoma staff.

"I knew I wanted to take some more trips without bringing into question of my integrity or my family's integrity. I didn't want to say I was committed and take trips, that didn't seem right. I want to do this the right way, this is the ethical thing to do right now."
quote:

"Honestly, I know that it would be ridiculous to try and get a football program to offer Max just because I want them to but at least I can try and get him some looks and try and give him any help I can," he explained. "I'm not exactly sure, but probably going to check out schools that have offered my brother and I."

"I know that we are two different people and it may or may not work out that we do get to play together but we are going to go through this process together.

So it's not exactly a certainty that the Waribokos will be playing together?

"I just want to know that we tried to explore that opportunity," he said. "Honestly, I don't want to do this for attention, because I feel like there may be, things out there that make this seem bad. I think (Oklahoma) is a wonderful program. I'm not trying to sever the relationship, they are still going to have a spot but I just want to talk to my family and this is something that we all want to do right now."

tmc, I just want to say that I saw where you posted on the recruiting forum that you avoid the place because it is basically tRant (but only if you are an LSU fan).

I just wanted to say that I really appreciate you continuing to offer your recruiting insights on this forum, and I know I am not alone.
