Why does that make Adams a bad pres?

Read this book...Behind the Hedges: Big Money and Power Politics at the University of Georgia

quote:

Ryan calls the Deloitte & Touche report “an astonishing indictment of an operation fundamentally out of control.” He quotes Robert Miller of King & Spalding (involved in creating the report), who says that “if this report had pertained to a senior executive of a major corporation, he would have been removed from power in 24 hours and would not have even been given an opportunity to reply.”

quote:

Among the issues addressed in the audit, reprinted in full in the appendix of Behind the Hedges, are the expenses and compensation of continuing president Michael Adams, stipends paid to the president’s wife, a $250,000 salary side-deal for football coach Jim Donnan, and the unapproved purchase of a facility in Costa Rica.

quote:

The article mentions former UGA veterinary professor Renee Kaswan, whom Whitt mentions in the book as conflicting with Adams. “The university stood to make $300 million in patent revenues from [Kaswan's research],” the paper reports, “but against her wishes, Adams and the University of Georgia Research Foundation sold those rights for a much smaller lump sum, perhaps costing the school more than $200 million.”

All I know is I STILL have trouble adding classes for one of my majors because UGA's systems STILL have issue understanding double majors. And oh lord, don't even lemme start about the transfer process to Georgia. I know it's usually rough everywhere but UGA should take pride in it

Mrs. Durden (and, thus, me) have gotten well acquainted with these issues. I envy no one that has to deal with it

The Terry plans are boss, but I remember when we had new Foley and Sanford Stadium expansion plans that were conveniently forgotten about. They're replacing Bolton with a new, bigger, better facility (and a cat walk across Lumpkin, from Baxter to Tate/SLC) so that's cool. But I'm waiting to see if they actually develop the ungodly hell that are the parking lots next to the Hull deck and in front of the new research library. So much potential in the heart of campus and at the new med complex, but it feels like they're dragging their feet.

It's a mess. The whole PSU thing really threw them early on, they apparently don't deal with them all that often. The PSU people/infrastructure are actually excellent (their spending/scandals not so much, but I digress) and so that only pointed out how clueless most UGA employees are. Oasis and their system are a joke. I can't even schedule appts with my advisor because of the double major flaw, I have to call her so she can set it up on her end

The school needs a lot of work but because UGA only employees people's friends idk of they're up for it. That's why I'm curious about this construction and the follow through. I just want the school to flourish with this gift, ya know?

If they follow through over the next 10 years with what they have planned out for the area around the Baxter/Lumpkin intersection, the campus and University would be on another level. If they also follow through on the medical complex, Athens as a whole would find itself on another level.

And as far as the nepotism goes, I'm getting large doses of that first-hand as I job hunt in and around the Athens area. I know we joke about how it has cultivated a country-club feel, but good lord. It's mind boggling the number of over-qualified candidates (qualified more than me, even) who can't get an interview because they don't personally know someone already on the inside or who don't live in the area.

Everyone else has already hit the big issues, but I'll add a few more:

-the whole north campus thing. The most ideal and perfect tailgate setting in the city and for about 2 or 3 years he completely banished anyone from using it unless you're drinking water or wanna take little junior on a fricking bounce house. It's eased up some, but you still can't get out there until 5 hours before kick. I ain't waiting til 2:00 to set up for a night game. "oh, but did you see how bad everyone trashed NC in 09!??!" Yeah, I did. So put out more trash cans, hire people to actually empty the fricking trash cans across the area, put out more dumpsters, send people on patrol to pick shite up. Ole Miss has some system in place I read about online a while back that's like that and they don't have any problems at all. But of course, that would require spending money so we won't.
-His whole anti-alcohol stance. He portrays such a public image of being totally intolerant of alcohol, even putting something in place in the UGA student handbook saying if you get arrested for alcohol your parents have to be notified (I think). We're talking about fricking college kids here. And yet, he runs up thousands on UGA's account to take personal little party vacations. And one of the big reasons he's been so completely safe in his job even though everyone hates him is because he has the support of the BOR, headed by his best bud Don Leeburn, who is at the head of one of the biggest liquor distributors around. The whole thing just seems very hypocritical.
-he's an awful tipper. I worked at bulldog carwash one summer. He brings in his brand new shiny mercedes and tipped $2. I mean he has to know that everyone working there attends his university, and he brings in a $100K+ car and doesn't even tip enough to buy a can of dip.

frick adams.

Figured this assclown out very early on. He shuts down tailgating on all roads for "safety". then charges $2000 to park in lots that used to be free. Then when the lots are full, magically it is now safe to park on the street as long as you purchased a$2000 pass for the now full lot. He has some insecurity issues whereby he surrounds himself with yes-men and runs off anyone critical of his leadership. A douche like this could only thrive in an environment like a college where you pretty much can't get fired.
